Peru beats Chile, the arena erupts – but it's still not enough for the Volleyball World Championship. At the conclusion of the 2026 South American Championship, the Peruvian women's national team finally showed the volleyball prowess that fans had been hoping for throughout the tournament. Peru defeated Chile 3-1 and bid farewell to Rio de Janeiro with a victory. The success had everything a volleyball match needs: a first set on a knife's edge, Chile's response, hard-fought rallies, and then a Peruvian team that never let up. The sets went to Peru with scores of 26:24, 23:25, 25:20, and 25:20. There was just one bitter catch: the breakthrough came too late. Peru will not be going to the 2027 Volleyball World Championship.

26:24 – Peru wins the first volleyball thriller
The very first set made it clear that Peru did not want to leave this tournament with another loss. Chile countered, and both teams fought a close battle for almost every point. At 24 points, nothing was decided yet, but Peru withstood the pressure and finally took the set 26:24. It was precisely this consistency that the Peruvian team had lacked too often in previous games.
However, Chile was not impressed. The second set again saw a close duel, but this time the Chileans had the better end, winning 25:23. After two sets, it was 1-1, and the decision had to come in the following sets.
Then Peru speeds up
After tying the sets, the game shifted. Peru played more focused in the third set, increased the pressure, and got into their rhythm better and better. Chile could no longer significantly reduce the deficit, and Peru secured the set 25:20. Now only one more set was needed for their first tournament victory.
In the fourth set, the Peruvian team also did not let up. Chile tried to fight back again, but Peru maintained their lead through the crucial phase and again won 25:20. After four sets, the 3-1 victory was secured. Their first win at this South American Championship was finally achieved.
A victory that hurts at the same time
As important as this success was for the team, the overall tournament picture is just as bitter. Peru had previously lost 3-1 to Argentina, 3-0 to Brazil, 3-1 to Venezuela, and 3-0 to Colombia. Four consecutive defeats had made the situation before the last game practically hopeless.
Even before the match against Colombia, Peru was under massive pressure. The subsequent 3-0 defeat ultimately deprived Peru of the crucial opportunity to reach one of the top spots.
2027 World Championship without Peru
The South American Championship was not just about medals. Much more was at stake for Peru, as the top three teams in South America received the coveted spots for the 2027 Volleyball World Championship in the USA and Canada. Peru needed at least third place but finished the tournament in fifth place, thus missing out on qualification.
This result is particularly painful for Peru. Volleyball holds a special place in the country, and the great successes of previous generations are still present today. The highlight remains the Olympic silver medal from Seoul 1988, when Peru was only stopped in the final by the Soviet Union. The current squad is still a good distance away from that international top level.
Peru saves points for the world ranking
The victory against Chile was not entirely without reward, however. For the 3-1 win, Peru received 5.94 points for the FIVB World Ranking. The national team had temporarily fallen to 49th place during the South American Championship and was able to improve to 46th place with the final success.
Before the tournament began, however, Peru had still been in 42nd place. The development in the world ranking also clearly shows what happened in Rio de Janeiro: the victory against Chile was important, but it could no longer compensate for the previous defeats.
Now the real work begins
After this tournament, coach Antonio Rizola faces a clear task. Peru needs more stability, more shared match practice, and above all, the ability to win close games against direct competitors. Peruvian volleyball remains internationally represented
While the national team missed the 2027 World Championship, there is an international bright spot at the club level. Alianza Lima will once again compete on the big international stage in December. The Peruvian champion will play from December 8th to 13th in São Paulo at the 2026 Volleyball Club World Championship, where they will face top international teams.
Thus, Peruvian women's volleyball remains internationally present even after the disappointing South American Championship. For some players from the national team's periphery, the Club World Championship also offers another opportunity to gain experience at the highest level.
Peru leaves Rio with mixed feelings
The last ball against Chile finally brought cause for celebration: 3-1, first tournament victory, and important points for the world ranking. Behind this success, however, is the number that weighs much heavier for Peru: fifth place. The South American Championship thus ends conciliatory, but not successfully.
Peru defeated Chile in the final match and once again showed the potential in this team. At the same time, the four previous defeats clearly showed where the problems lie. For the 2027 World Championship, the strong response against Chile comes too late.
