Perusina, Perusino and Franz in Sechura

In Sechura, Franz's origins turn into an adventure: His sister Fina has disappeared, and only a Sechura fox can read the tracks between desert, bay, and mangroves.

"That wasn't the wind," Franz whispers. "That was Fina."

Franz follows the call of his sister Fina between desert, bay and mangroves of Sechura

Franz and the Trail in the Hot Sand

A personal Sechura story for Franz: His sister Fina is stuck somewhere between hot sand, fishing nets, and mangrove roots, while wind and tide erase the tracks.

Franz heard the call before anyone else noticed anything.

Franz hears Fina's call from the dunes at Sechura Bay
Franz recognizes a fox call that only he understands.

Perusina sat on the edge of a fishing boat, sorting shells by shape. Perusino tried to untangle a line that seemed determined never to be straight again. Evening light lay over Sechura Bay. The sea gleamed flat and silver. Beyond it, the desert began.

Then Franz flinched. His ears stood stiffly. His tail became very still.

"What is it?" Perusina asked.

Then the call came again. High. Short. Almost like wind between dry branches.

Franz jumped from the boat. "Fina."

"Who is Fina?" Perusino asked.

"My sister."

Franz discovers small paw prints in the sand of the Sechura desert
Small tracks lead into the desert, but the wind erases them.

That was enough. Perusina dropped the shells. Perusino threw the line into the boat, where it immediately looked even worse than before. Then they ran after Franz.

They found the first tracks in the sand behind a dry bush. Small paw prints. Next to them, a drag mark.

"She's hurt?" Perusina asked.

Franz sniffed. "No. She was dragging something."

The wind swept over the dune. One print disappeared. Then the next.

"Faster," Franz said.

A shell with a red thread lies as a clue in the sand of Sechura
A piece of Fina's scarf lies in the middle of the sand.

They climbed over the sand. With every step, they slid back. Perusino gasped. "Why does the desert build paths that don't want to be paths?"

Franz suddenly stopped. Before him lay a shell. Not by the sea. In the middle of the sand. A red thread was stuck in it.

"Fina's scarf," he whispered.

The thread smelled of salt, mud, and fear.

Perusina looked down at the bay. "She didn't go further into the desert. She went back to the water."

A torn fishing net with mangrove mud leads the trail towards the Sechura estuary
At the edge of the estuary, they find mud and a piece of net.

Below, fishermen were working on nets. One held a torn piece in his hand.

"Have you seen a little fox?" Perusino called out.

The fisherman lifted the net. "Only this. It was hanging at the edge of the estuary. Something got caught in it and broke free again."

Franz gritted his teeth. Mud clung to the net. Not dry desert sand. Dark, heavy mangrove mud.

"Fina is by the roots," he said.

Fina sits on a mangrove root island while the water rises in Sechura
Between mangrove roots, the water rises.

When they reached the mangroves, the light was deeper. Water stood between the roots. Everywhere there was cracking, dripping, and rustling. The ground looked firm but gave way with every step.

"Don't just walk," Franz warned. "The mud will hold you."

Then they heard the call again.

Fina sat on a small root island between two water channels. She was smaller than Franz, with sand-colored fur and a tattered red scarf around her neck. Mud bubbled beneath her. Behind her, the water rose.

"Franz!" she cried.

Perusina and Perusino build a rescue bridge from driftwood and fishing net in the mangroves of Sechura
Perusina and Perusino build a path from net and driftwood.

Franz lunged forward. Perusina grabbed him by his scarf. "Wait. If you slip, we'll all get stuck."

"She's my sister!"

"Then we'll rescue her properly."

Perusina took the torn fishing net. Perusino collected driftwood. Together, they tied three flat poles together. Not a real bridge. More like a wobbly promise.

Suddenly, a root cracked. Fina slipped. Her front paws dug in, but the mud pulled at her hind legs.

"Franz!" she screamed.

Franz rescues his sister Fina with the help of Perusina and Perusino in the mangroves of Sechura
Franz reaches Fina as the tide returns.

Franz ran. The first pole held. The second sank. The third turned away. Franz jumped, landed on a mangrove root, slipped, caught himself with his claws, and stretched out to Fina.

Too short.

Perusino threw the net. It spread in the air, fell over a root, and got caught. Perusina pulled it tight.

"Franz, along that!"

Franz bit into the net, pulled himself forward, and reached Fina. "Don't struggle. Like before in the cave. Make yourself small. Weight forward."

Fina nodded. Franz grabbed her scarf. Perusina and Perusino pulled on the net. At first, nothing moved. Then the mud gave way with a squelch.

Fina slid free.

On the bank, she shivered. Franz stood in front of her, as if he had to push away the entire desert himself.

"Why were you here alone?" he asked.

Fina opened her paw. In it lay a small bone pendant. Three symbols were carved on it: a dune, a root, and a star.

"I was looking for the old cave," she said. "The place where our family used to find shelter when the wind changed the dunes."

Franz looked at the bay, at the mangroves, and at the desert, which turned red in the evening light.

"Then we'll find it together."

The case continues: Fina is rescued. But the symbols on the pendant lead to an old fox den in Sechura.

What's in this adventure?

Sechura connects desert, bay, fishing, estuary, and mangroves. Precisely this alternation of sand, water, and mud drives the plot.
Franz is a Sechura fox. That's why this story can show his origins: smells in the sand, fox calls, tracking, and shelters in a dry landscape.
The mangroves and waterways are sensitive habitats. In the story, children learn that they must walk carefully, observe, and cooperate there.

Three Trails of the Friends
