Kuélap at a Glance

The site is located on a mountain ridge in the Luya province. It was built by the Chachapoya culture and developed into one of the most impressive pre-Columbian building complexes in northern Peru.

Visitors don't see a single ruin, but a sprawling fortified settlement with walls, paths, residential areas, and special structures. The journey through the mountainous landscape of Amazonas is already part of the experience.

Why a Visit is Worthwhile

Particularly striking are the mighty outer walls. They shape the first impression of the site and show the effort the Chachapoya put into its construction.

Inside, there are numerous traces of circular buildings, which are typical of the architecture of this culture. Kuélap thus differs significantly from the well-known Inca sites in southern Peru.

Current Note: Visiting routes and accessible areas may change due to conservation and safety work. In 2026, among other things, the visiting area at the restored south wall was reopened. Before traveling, the current information from the Ministry of Culture should be checked.

History and Architecture

Kuélap is attributed to the Chachapoya culture, which shaped large parts of the present-day Amazonas region long before the Spanish conquest. The site was built over a long period and was extended several times.

Characteristic are the circular layouts of many buildings. Geometric stone friezes and other decorative elements are preserved on individual structures.

Kuélap Archaeological Complex

The Ministry of Culture distinguishes between a free visit to the CAMK and the CAMK + Llaqta ticket for access to the inner circuit of the archaeological site.

  • CAMK: Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00. This includes the visitor center, exhibition, interpretation area, paths, and viewing zones.
  • Llaqta: Tuesday to Sunday, entry according to booked time slot between 09:00 and 14:50.
  • Important: The time on the ticket indicates the intended entry into the Llaqta. Travel, Telecabinas, and walking time must be planned beforehand.

Further discounts apply to specific groups of people, among others. People with disabilities may receive free admission according to published guidelines. On the first Sunday of the month, Peruvians and foreign residents of Peru receive free admission, but a corresponding ticket must still be generated.

Telecabinas Kuélap

  • Operation for Visitors: Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00 to 16:30.
  • Same-day ticket sales: according to published information until 15:45.
  • Rate: S/ 26.50 for cash payment; for payment with national card or QR, S/ 27.31 is shown due to payment provider fees.
  • Important: The Telecabinas rate does not include admission to the archaeological site.

What Visitors Should Note On-site

The altitude is noticeable. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are advisable, as is sun and rain protection. The weather can change significantly even within a single day.

  • Bring water and drink enough.
  • Pack a light rain jacket or poncho.
  • Use sun protection even on cloudy days.
  • Stay on designated paths.
  • Plan extra time for photos and breaks.

Kuélap with Children

Kuélap can also be interesting for families. Children here experience a large fortified complex instead of a classic museum. However, parents should consider the altitude, longer walks, changing weather, and potential waiting times.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kuélap

How much time should one plan for Kuélap?

At least half a day should be allocated for the site itself and the journey. From Chachapoyas, a generous daily plan is more relaxed.

Can Kuélap be visited without an organized tour?

Travel can be organized individually. Current access, ticket, and transport rules should be checked beforehand.

How high is Kuélap?

The archaeological site is located at an altitude of approximately 3,000 meters in the Amazonas region.

Do you need a ticket?

A separate ticket is required for the Llaqta. The Telecabinas ticket is separate from this. Current time slots are displayed on Tu Boleto.

Is Kuélap suitable for children?
