Kuélap at a glance
The site is situated on a mountain ridge in the Luya province. It was built by the Chachapoya culture and became one of the most impressive pre-Columbian architectural complexes in northern Peru.

Why it's worth a visit
The massive outer walls are particularly striking. They define the initial impression of the site and demonstrate the effort the Chachapoya put into construction.
Inside, there are numerous traces of round buildings, typical of this culture's architecture. Kuélap thus differs significantly from the famous Inca sites in southern Peru.

History and architecture
Kuélap is attributed to the Chachapoya culture, which shaped large parts of the current Amazonas region long before the Spanish conquest. The site was built over a long period and expanded several times.
The round floor plans of many buildings are characteristic. Geometric stone friezes and other decorative elements have been preserved on individual structures.

Kuélap Archaeological Complex
The Ministry of Culture distinguishes between the free visit to the CAMK and the CAMK + Llaqta ticket for access to the interior tour of the archaeological site.
- CAMK: Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:00. This includes, among other things, the visitor center, exhibition, interpretation area, paths, and viewpoints.
- Llaqta: Tuesday to Sunday, admission according to the booked time slot between 09:00 and 14:50.
- Important: The time on the ticket refers to the scheduled entry to the Llaqta. Travel, telecabinas, and the walk must be planned in advance.

Further discounts apply to specific groups of people, among others. People with disabilities may receive free admission according to the published guidelines. On the first Sunday of the month, admission is free for Peruvians and foreign residents of Peru, though a corresponding ticket must still be generated.

- Operations for visitors: Tuesday to Sunday, 08:00 to 16:30.
- Same-day ticket sales: according to published information until 15:45.
- Rate: S/ 26.50 for cash payment; when paying with a national card or QR, S/ 27.31 is shown due to the payment provider's commission.
- Important: The telecabinas rate does not include admission to the archaeological site.
What visitors should keep in mind
The high altitude is noticeable. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are useful, as are sun and rain protection. The weather can change significantly even within a single day.
- Bring water and drink enough.
- Pack a light rain jacket or poncho.
- Use sun protection even on cloudy days.
- Stay on the designated paths.
- Allow extra time for photos and breaks.
Kuélap with children
Kuélap can also be interesting for families. Here, children experience a large fortified site instead of a classic museum. Parents should, however, take into account the high altitude, longer distances, changing weather, and potential waiting times.

How much time should one plan for Kuélap?
At least half a day should be set aside for the site itself and the journey there. A generous daily plan from Chachapoyas is more relaxed.
Can you visit Kuélap without an organized tour?
The journey can be organized individually. Current access, ticket, and transport rules should be checked beforehand.
How high is Kuélap?
The archaeological site is located at about 3,000 meters above sea level in the Amazonas region.
Do you need a ticket?
A separate ticket is required for the Llaqta. The telecabinas ticket is separate from this. Current time slots are displayed via Tu Boleto.
