Plaza San Miguel from my perspective

My name is Perusino and I am seven years old. Today I'm going to tell you about a place that never whispers. Plaza San Miguel is not a shopping mall for relaxing. This place is loud, colorful, and constantly moving. When adults talk about peace and quiet, I think of ear protection.

Even before the entrance, everything is jumbled. People walk, stand, turn around and walk again. Children shout, parents answer louder, but the loudspeakers still win. I stand in the middle of it all and find it somehow normal. This is what Lima sounds like when it's not sleeping.

How this place came to be

Plaza San Miguel has existed since the seventies. Back then, it was a sign of modern city life. Today, it feels more like a city of its own. Multiple levels, many shops, and no end in sight. I lose my bearings there faster than my parents do.

Signs, screens, and offers blink everywhere. Some people look as if they have to buy everything. Others seem to just want to get out. I observe their faces very carefully. You learn a lot about adults here.

Shopping here is not a quiet sport

On the ground floor, large stores stand side by side. Clothes hang neatly until someone touches them. Price tags make adults think. Children think less and just point. That saves time and discussions.

Perusino was here too

A family tries on shoes. The child dances, the father calculates, the mother sighs. I watch and learn for life. Shopping is teamwork with side effects. Sometimes with snacks as a reward.

Supermarket and cinema non-stop

The supermarket smells of bread, fruit, and decisions. Carts get fuller and fuller, even though no one planned it. An employee sorts mangoes with great patience. A man inspects fish as if he suspects something. I'd rather stick to the cookie aisle.

The cinema is in the middle of the building. You can smell popcorn from far away. Children carry cups that are almost bigger than they are. Parents hope for seating without discussion. It's loud inside, and outside too.

Food helps against bad moods

Hunger is simply part of it here. Tables, trays, and people with fries are everywhere. There are burgers, chicken, and Peruvian dishes. I eat slowly and watch a lot. Observing is just as satisfying.

An elderly lady sits next to me. She comes here almost every weekend. She says the place feels familiar. I think she means the chaos. You get used to everything.

Why everyone ends up here

Plaza San Miguel is located on important streets. Many parts of the city meet right here. Some come specifically, others by chance. Travelers from the airport also end up here. Mostly for food or souvenirs.

The place attracts people like a magnet. Sometimes it seems like half of Lima is there. Everyone moves at the same time and in confusion. I prefer to hold onto familiar hands. Otherwise, I'll end up with strange families.

Small scenes, big impact

A child gets a toy and beams. Then it realizes the packaging won't open. Teenagers take pictures and laugh loudly. Someone pushes toilet paper through the frame. I laugh quietly to myself.

A man sleeps on a bench. Everything around him remains loud. I wonder how deep his sleep is. Maybe he dreams of silence. Rather unlikely here.

It only gets brighter in the evening

When it gets dark, everything stays alive. Lights shine, music plays, voices mingle. A musician plays guitar at the entrance. People stop briefly and move on. No one is in a hurry.

Couples walk across the square. Children trudge tiredly behind. Parents count steps to the exit. I gather last impressions. My head is as full as the place.

Why I remember it

Plaza San Miguel shows me real Lima. Not quiet, not orderly, but honest. Everyday life, stress, and laughter meet here. You see people as they really are. I find that exciting.

I was there, ate, marveled, and listened. My ears were tired, my head satisfied. Places like this stick with you. Perusino was here: Plaza San Miguel. And Lima was very loud.
