Illapa and the Lightning Bolt That Split

Illapa is the god of thunder and lightning in the land of high mountains. In this legend, children learn how Illapa brings order to the sky with his power.

The second lightning bolt takes a different path and turns too early. It only grazes the edges of the clouds and shines far over an empty plain. However, the third lightning bolt remains in Illapa's thoughts. The god knows that this lightning bolt has hidden in the clouds. Above the mountains, the clouds grow denser and press heavily downwards. The sky hums softly, as if holding onto something that should actually move on.
The thunder god recognizes that the power of the third lightning bolt is stuck in the wrong place. In this place, neither rain can fall nor thunder properly respond. The lightning's task remains half-finished and awaits a better path. For a god of the sky, a half-path is not a good solution.
Instead of another hard strike, the god now changes the tension in the sky. The clouds draw closer together, forming a wide, clear path. The lines of light rearrange themselves and gain a clearer direction. The hidden lightning bolt feels that its path is no longer blocked.
With a bright flash, the lightning bolt finally breaks free from its hiding place. Once again, it glides through the clouds and seeks a new target. Then it strikes exactly where dry fields urgently need water. The sky opens, and the first heavy rain falls to the earth.
The drops hit cracked earth, thirsty plants, and waiting animals. Paths become dark and soft, and dusty slopes transform into wet trails. The rain comes neither too early nor too late, but exactly at the right moment. The tense air breathes a sigh of relief and appears calmer again.
Since this legend, people in the mountains tell of the divided lightning bolt. The storytellers report that Illapa sometimes allows a lightning bolt to split so that different paths become possible. Some lightning bolts strike and truly change something in the world. Others disappear high in the sky, leaving no trace.
However, some lightning bolts wait so long until the god of thunder recognizes the right time. Then this sky god seeks a good place and a suitable moment.
