Huaca Rajada–Sipán is among the most significant archaeological sites of the Moche culture. In 1987, the unlooted tomb of the Lord of Sipán was discovered here; today, the excavation site and the museum connect the history of the discovery with the original burial contexts.

Huaca Rajada–Sipán at a glance

The archaeological complex is located near Sipán in the Saña district, about 27 kilometers east of Chiclayo. Three large adobe structures characterize the site, which is also known by the name Huaca Rajada.

The site gained international recognition in 1987 with the discovery of the unlooted tomb of the Lord of Sipán. The find fundamentally changed the understanding of Moche governance, religion, and burial rituals.

Museo de Sitio Huaca Rajada–Sipán

The museum explains the excavations and reconstructs the burial contexts of several Moche elites. It complements the tour of the site and should be visited together with the complex.

Opening hours and entry

Since January 2026, Huaca Rajada–Sipán has been open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The facility remains closed on Mondays.
