Chan Chan – The Chimú Mud City near Trujillo

Chan Chan was the capital of the Chimú Empire and is considered the largest city of adobe architecture in pre-Columbian America. The publicly accessible Nik An complex features monumental walls, plazas, and reliefs with motifs from the marine world.

Chan Chan at a Glance

Chan Chan is located in the Moche Valley west of Trujillo. The city was the political and administrative center of the Chimú Empire, which reached its peak in the 15th century before being conquered by the Incas.

UNESCO describes Chan Chan as the largest city of adobe architecture in pre-Columbian America. The monumental core zone consisted of nine large walled palace or citadel complexes and other residential, production, and irrigation areas.

Why a Visit is Worthwhile

The tour immediately reveals the dimensions of the former Chimú capital. High adobe walls, long corridors, ceremonial plazas, storage areas, and reliefs demonstrate a strictly structured urban planning.

Particularly characteristic are geometric patterns and depictions of fish, birds, waves, and nets. They point to the importance of the sea and water management for society on the north Peruvian coast.

Visitor Areas in Chan Chan

Walled Complex Nik An

Nik An is the main publicly accessible area of the archaeological zone. The tour leads through plazas, narrow corridors, and areas with clearly visible adobe reliefs. The complex was formerly known as Palacio Tschudi.

Chan Chan Museum

The museum complements the tour with artifacts, models, and explanations of the development of the Chimú culture. The museum and archaeological tour should be combined whenever possible.

Opening Hours and Admission

The Dirección Desconcentrada de Cultura La Libertad last published opening hours for Chan Chan and the museum from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 16:00. The site is therefore closed on Mondays.

Opening hours, admission fees, and accessible areas may change at short notice due to conservation work or heavy rainfall. Current information should therefore be checked with the cultural authority before visiting.

Best Time to Visit

Chan Chan can generally be visited all year round. A morning tour is usually more pleasant due to the strong coastal sun. There is little shade on the site.

In the event of unusually heavy rainfall, the site may be closed as a precaution. This applies particularly to weather conditions associated with El Niño.

What Visitors Should Bring

Chan Chan with Children

The tour is generally possible with children. The reliefs, narrow passages, and large plazas make the site vivid. Due to the sun, little shade, and longer walking distances, water, sun protection, and breaks should be planned.
