Waru Waru in Peru impressively show how ancient knowledge can suddenly become highly relevant again. On the Altiplano of Puno, Aymara communities have revived a millennia-old form of agriculture. What at first glance looks like an unusual pattern of earth and water is an ingenious system against frost, drought, and floods.
In Acora, south of the city of Puno, five of these historical cultivation areas have been restored. Today, native potatoes and other traditional crops are growing on them again. The project thus shows a side of Peru that is rarely perceived outside the country. This is not about an archaeological site that is merely to be preserved. Millennia-old knowledge is being put to practical use again.
What are Waru Waru?
Waru Waru are raised planting beds surrounded by water channels. In parts of the Andes region, such systems are also called Sukakollos. Earth is mounded into raised fields. Between these areas run channels where water can be stored.
This creates an agricultural system that copes much better with the extreme conditions of the Altiplano than a conventional field. The principle is by no means new. Agricultural systems of this kind emerged in the Peruvian Andes highlands about 3,000 years ago. This makes the Waru Waru one of the most remarkable examples of how the people of the Andes adapted their agriculture to difficult environmental conditions.
Agriculture at almost 4,000 meters above sea level
To understand why this technique is so important, one must look at the landscape around Lake Titicaca. Acora is located south of Puno. Many agriculturally used areas in the region are at an altitude of more than 3,800 meters.
The conditions are challenging. During the day, there can be intense sun exposure, while temperatures drop sharply at night. Frost can significantly damage a harvest within a short time. In addition, there are periods of drought and times of heavy rainfall. The Waru Waru react precisely to these contrasts.
Water becomes a natural heat reservoir
The effect of the water channels is particularly interesting. During the day, the water absorbs heat from solar radiation. When temperatures drop at night, it releases some of this stored heat back into its surroundings. This creates a more favorable microclimate around the plants. This can make all the difference when frost occurs on the Altiplano at night.
The combination of raised fields and water-filled channels can mitigate temperature fluctuations and thus facilitate cultivation under the difficult conditions of the highlands.
At the same time, the channels perform another important task. In times of drought, water can be retained longer in the system. In heavy rainfall, excess water can be drained away. This makes the Waru Waru a combination of field, irrigation system, drainage, and heat reservoir.
Why the Waru Waru disappeared
A functional technique does not necessarily disappear because it is bad. In the case of the Waru Waru, societal changes played an important role. Traditional forms of communal work lost importance. At the same time, many younger residents of rural communities migrated to the cities.
Along with this, knowledge was also lost. Many Waru Waru areas were no longer maintained over time. Channels silted up, and the raised fields slowly disappeared from the landscape.
In Acora, this began to change again. Community members remembered that their parents and grandparents still knew this form of agriculture. From this memory arose the desire to rebuild the old fields.
Five Waru Waru have been restored
Together with the Asociación Aymara Suma Yapu and several Aymara communities in Acora, five Waru Waru have now been reconstructed. The project is supported by the World Monuments Fund Peru.
The goal is explicitly not just to recreate a historical landscape. The areas are being agriculturally used again. Farmers reshaped the raised planting beds and laid out the surrounding channels. They were guided by the traditional knowledge of previous generations. The first results show that this knowledge still works.
Old potato varieties return
The potato plays a special role. Peru possesses an extraordinary diversity of native potato varieties. Many of them are closely linked to specific altitudes, soils, and local traditions.
In connection with the project in Acora, traditional varieties are being re-cultivated and documented. The participating communities preserve numerous potato variants and are working to reintroduce lost seeds more strongly into agriculture.
In addition, the Waru Waru are also suitable for other typical highland plants. These include, for example, quinoa and cañihua. Thus, not only a historical cultivation method is preserved. At the same time, a part of Peru's agricultural biodiversity remains alive.
A first successful harvest
The restored fields are no longer merely experimental. Potatoes have already been harvested on the reconstructed Waru Waru. The current project presents the first harvest of the 2025/2026 agricultural campaign.
The results have also received attention outside Puno. At the end of August 2026, representatives of the Aymara communities presented their work at the event "Saberes ancestrales y reconstrucción de los Waru Waru" in Lima. Photographs, videos, and information about the reconstruction were shown there. At the same time, visitors could learn about products from the new harvest. Thus, an agricultural tradition from the Altiplano made its way directly to the Peruvian capital.
International recognition for the fields of Puno
The significance of the Waru Waru now extends beyond Peru. The agricultural Waru Waru fields of Puno were included in the World Monuments Watch program in 2025. The application was submitted by the Asociación Aymara Suma Yapu together with the Dirección Desconcentrada de Cultura de Puno.
The role of the local population is remarkable. The project is not simply brought into the region from outside. The communities themselves are the bearers of knowledge and an essential part of its transmission.
Additionally, the Waru Waru were included in the World Monuments Fund's Cultivating Resilience program. This program focuses on historical cultural landscapes that can provide solutions to contemporary climatic challenges.
What Waru Waru have to do with climate change
Precisely this point makes the project particularly interesting today. The people who created Waru Waru millennia ago naturally did not know the term climate change. However, they knew the extreme conditions of their homeland very well.
They developed a system that stores water, can reduce frost damage, and can also handle large fluctuations in precipitation. Precisely these properties are gaining importance again today.
Instead of exclusively seeking modern technical solutions, the example from Puno shows that historical knowledge can also provide answers to current problems. This does not mean replacing modern agriculture with millennia-old methods. Rather, both approaches can benefit from each other.
More than an agricultural technique
Waru Waru are more than unusually shaped fields. They embody knowledge about water, soil, temperature, plants, and communal work. At the same time, they tell something about Peru.
The country's history consists not only of monumental structures like Machu Picchu, Sacsayhuamán, or the great temple complexes of early cultures. Technical knowledge also manifested itself where people had to secure their daily livelihood.
Agriculture was crucial for this. Terraces, irrigation systems, and Waru Waru show how intensely the inhabitants of the Andes interacted with their environment. Some of these solutions still work millennia later.
Knowledge that is needed again
The project in Acora connects past and present in an unusual way. The Waru Waru are not being restored for visitors to view from a distance. They are being worked on, sown, and harvested again.
Children and younger community residents can thus see how the technique works. Knowledge that was previously primarily present in the memories of older generations is being practically passed on again.
For the participating communities, it is also about food security and economic prospects. Potatoes, for example, can be processed into chuño or tunta and thus stored for a long time. Traditional knowledge thus includes not only cultivation but also the entire use of the harvest.
A different image of Peru
Precisely for this reason, it is worth looking at Acora. Peru possesses a cultural heritage that extends far beyond ruins and museums. A part of this heritage lives on in techniques, plants, recipes, and knowledge that have been passed down through generations within families and communities.
The Waru Waru in Peru are an impressive example of this. What originated around 3,000 years ago as a response to frost, water, and difficult soils could today again help make agriculture more resilient.
Sometimes a possible answer to the future has been in the ground for millennia.
