The Teleférico de Miraflores is about to officially open, creating a new connection between the Malecón and the Costa Verde in Lima. The first cable car in the Peruvian capital runs from Parque Domodossola down to Playa Redondo. It takes about two minutes to cover the approximately 305-meter route.
As of early September 2026, the system is in trial operation. The technical systems are already certified, while the final work is being completed. There is no binding date yet for the start of regular operation.
From the Malecón to the Costa Verde in two minutes
Miraflores is located directly on the Pacific, but between the well-known Malecón and the beaches of the Costa Verde rises Lima's striking cliff. The Teleférico overcomes this altitude difference directly.
The upper station is located at Parque Domodossola between Puente de la Paz and the Larcomar shopping center. The lower station is located at Playa Redondo. This creates a direct connection between one of the most visited areas of Miraflores and the coast.
Two cabins for 15 people each
The Teleférico operates on a pendulum principle. While one cabin descends, the other ascends. Each cabin can accommodate a maximum of 15 people. Ten passengers can sit, and five more can stand.
The cable car technology comes from the Austrian manufacturer Doppelmayr. The project operator is Consorcio Zigzag Teleféricos. The investment amounts to approximately ten million US dollars.
Bicycles and surfboards allowed
The Costa Verde is not only an excursion destination but also one of Lima's most important sports areas. Surfers, in particular, characterize the scene on the beaches below Miraflores.
This was taken into account during planning. Up to two bicycles or two surfboards can be transported in the cabins. Especially for surfers, the path between Miraflores and the beaches will thus become considerably easier.
Accessible access planned
The facility is also intended to be accessible for people with reduced mobility. An elevator, which is part of the barrier-free access, is being completed for this purpose.
As of early September 2026, work on the elevator is among the last items before full commissioning. Once completed, wheelchair users and older people will also be able to use the connection to the Costa Verde more easily.
View over the Costa Verde and the Pacific
In addition to its function as a transport link, the cable car itself is likely to become an attraction. During the short ride, there is a wide view of the Pacific, the Costa Verde, and parts of the coastal road.
This also makes the Teleférico interesting for tourists. The Malecón, Parque del Amor, and Larcomar are already well-known destinations in Miraflores. With the cable car, a visit can now be directly combined with a trip to the coast.
How much does the Teleférico de Miraflores cost?
A final fare for all user groups had not yet been published as of early September 2026. Different prices are planned for residents of Miraflores, Peruvian visitors, and foreign tourists.
According to the Municipalidad de Miraflores, prices are expected to remain moderate. The city stated that a ride should be cheaper than a taxi ride from the cliff down to the beach. Visitors are therefore advised to check the current fare before traveling.
When will the cable car open?
The Teleférico is currently in what is known as "marcha blanca." In this trial operation, the system is tested under real conditions. Residents have also already been able to use the connection.
According to the city, the mechanical and operational components are fully certified and comply with European standards. In addition to minor finishing touches, the elevator for barrier-free access still needs to be completed.
The Municipalidad de Miraflores expects regular operation to begin soon. A binding opening date has not yet been announced.
Safety and rescue
Trained rescue personnel are planned for operation. The staff have appropriate equipment and safety systems to intervene in the event of an incident.
The development of the project took several years. The agreement for the planning, construction, equipment, operation, and maintenance of the facility was already concluded in 2022.
More than a tourist attraction
The route, which is only 305 meters long, initially seems short. However, the decisive factor is the altitude difference between the Miraflores city area and the beaches.
Uptown are parks, hotels, restaurants, residential areas, and tourist facilities. Down by the coast are beaches, sports areas, and the Circuito de Playas. Until now, visitors had to use longer routes via roads and access points along the cliff.
The Teleférico now creates a direct connection between the two levels. Gastronomic, sports, and tourist offers on the Costa Verde could also benefit from this.
Miraflores gets a new connection to the sea
The Teleférico de Miraflores is not a kilometer-long cable car over Lima. Its importance lies in the direct connection between two areas that were previously separated by the cliff.
For residents, the path to the Costa Verde is shortened. Surfers and cyclists can take their equipment with them. People with reduced mobility should gain easier access to the coast.
For travelers, another aspect is added: during the approximately two-minute ride, the special location of Miraflores between a big city, cliff, and Pacific ocean reveals itself from a new perspective.
