Strong winds on Peru's coast: SENAMHI warns of dangerous gusts

Strong coastal winds are causing dust, sand, and reduced visibility in Peru. Key information on the current weather situation.

Strong winds are once again causing difficult weather conditions along the Peruvian coast. Coastal areas from northern to southern Peru are affected. Especially in open and desert-like areas, gusts can stir up dust and sand, significantly reducing visibility.

The stronger coastal winds are also noticeable in Lima. For residents and travelers, loose objects, branches, billboards, and makeshift roof structures pose a particular risk.

Key facts at a glance

Area: Peruvian coast
Period: current weather situation from August 19, 2026
Hazard: strong coastal winds and powerful gusts
Possible consequences: dust and sand, reduced visibility, falling branches and loose structural elements
Particularly relevant: open coastal sections, roads, construction sites, and areas with loose structures

SENAMHI continuously monitors wind development along the coast. During previous strong wind events, speeds of around 41 km/h were measured in Ica. There, the wind led to significant dust and sand drifts.

One cause of such wind phases is the development of the South Pacific High. If this pressure system intensifies or approaches the coast, the southerly and southwesterly winds along the Peruvian Pacific can significantly increase.

Impacts in cities

In densely populated areas, there is a different danger than in desert regions. Strong gusts can dislodge poorly secured sheet metal, signs, and other objects. Trees and larger branches also pose a risk.

Pedestrians should therefore be particularly careful near large trees, construction sites, and billboards. On roads, additional stirred-up dust can impair visibility. Drivers should adjust their speed accordingly and maintain greater distances.

What travelers should consider

Travelers do not fundamentally need to change their plans due to the weather conditions. However, when driving along the coast, unexpected gusts and localized poor visibility should be expected.

Loose objects should be secured. During strong gusts, a safe distance should be maintained from large trees, unstable structures, scaffolding, and billboards. Those planning longer journeys along the coast should check the latest SENAMHI reports before departure.

Why strong coastal winds occur in Peru

Stronger winds are fundamentally part of the weather events on the Peruvian Pacific coast. The South Pacific High plays an important role in this. The air pressure difference between the Pacific and the South American continent influences the strength of coastal winds.

Under appropriate atmospheric conditions, these can intensify significantly. The effects are particularly visible in the dry regions of Peru. There, strong gusts are sufficient to transport large quantities of sand and dust into the air.
