Pope Leo XIV will visit Peru in November 2026. The Vatican released the official itinerary for the trip on September 21, 2026. From November 11 to 16, the trip will take the Pope through several regions of the country. Events are planned in Lima and Callao, as well as visits to Chiclayo, Pimentel, Santa Cruz de Succhabamba, Cusco, and Pucallpa. This marks the first time that not only the locations of the trip have been confirmed, but also numerous event venues and times. The program includes large public masses, encounters with youth and students, and meetings with representatives of indigenous communities in the Amazon region.
Arrival of Pope Leo XIV in Lima on November 11
Pope Leo XIV will first travel through Uruguay and Argentina. On Wednesday, November 11, 2026, he will fly from Buenos Aires to Peru. Arrival at the Naval Air Base in Callao is scheduled for 5:30 PM. The official reception will take place there. At 6:15 PM, the welcoming ceremony at the Government Palace will follow. Subsequently, a meeting with the President of the Republic is planned. At 7:45 PM, Leo XIV will meet with representatives of the authorities, civil society, and the diplomatic corps at the Gran Teatro Nacional.
November 12: A day in Lima
On Thursday, Pope Leo XIV will remain in Lima. A meeting with the Peruvian bishops is scheduled for 9:30 AM in the chapel of the Archbishop's Residence. Afterwards, he will participate in a joint prayer with bishops, priests, religious, seminarians, and other church representatives at the Cathedral of Lima. At 11:30 AM, an encounter regarding the challenges and hopes for the future of the Peruvian people is planned in the square in front of the cathedral. At 6:00 PM, a prayer vigil with youth and students will follow at the Estadio Monumental in Lima.
November 13: Pope Leo XIV travels to Chiclayo
On November 13, the Pope will depart Lima at 7:40 AM and fly to Chiclayo. Landing at the "Teniente Coronel Pedro Ruiz Gallo" Air Base is scheduled for 9:10 AM. At 10:30 AM, a large mass will take place on the Pampas de Pimentel. Afterward, Leo XIV will pay a private visit to the San Óscar A. Romero Chapel. At 4:30 PM, an encounter with church representatives will follow at the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Paz. At 5:45 PM, the Pope will meet with representatives of the academic world at the Universidad Católica Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo.
Chiclayo is not an ordinary destination on an international trip for Leo XIV. Robert Francis Prevost was active in Peru for many years and served as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023. PeruMagazin had already reported on the initially announced program for the Pope's visit to Chiclayo.
November 14: From Chiclayo to Cajamarca
On Saturday, November 14, the program begins at 8:00 AM with a ceremony at the Santa María Cathedral in Chiclayo. Subsequently, Leo XIV will travel by helicopter to Santa Cruz de Succhabamba in the Cajamarca region. Arrival is scheduled for 9:50 AM. There, a mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on the esplanade of Santa Cruz de Succhabamba. At 1:15 PM, the Pope will fly back to Chiclayo. The afternoon program includes a prayer encounter to mark the end of the jubilee year of Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo.
November 15: Cusco and Sacsayhuamán
On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV will depart from Chiclayo at 7:50 AM for Cusco. Arrival at the Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport is scheduled for 10:00 AM. At 10:30 AM, an encounter with the faithful and representatives of popular piety will take place at the Sacsayhuamán archaeological park. At 11:45 AM, the Angelus prayer will follow in the square in front of the Cusco Cathedral. By 1:05 PM, the Pope will already be departing for the Peruvian Amazon region.
Pope Leo XIV visits Pucallpa
Leo XIV is scheduled to land in Pucallpa at 2:30 PM. At the Malecón Puerto Callao, the Pope will meet with missionaries and representatives of the Amazonian peoples at 3:00 PM. At 4:45 PM, Leo XIV will celebrate mass at the Villa Deportiva Regional Ucayali. In the evening, he will fly back to Lima. Arrival in Callao is planned for 8:20 PM.
November 16: Grand concluding mass in Lima
The final day of the Peru trip begins on Monday, November 16, with a visit to staff and residents of a facility run by the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly. At 10:30 AM, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate the concluding mass of his Peru visit at the Las Palmas Air Base in Lima. At 1:15 PM, the official farewell ceremony will take place at the Naval Air Base in Callao. Departure for Rome is scheduled for 1:45 PM.
Peru plays a special role for Leo XIV
The trip has a significance for Peru that goes beyond an ordinary state and pastoral visit. Leo XIV has spent a significant portion of his ecclesiastical life in Peru. The US-born Robert Francis Prevost began working as a missionary in Peru in the 1980s. Later, he led the Diocese of Chiclayo. In 2015, he was officially named Bishop of Chiclayo and remained in that office until 2023. Leo XIV also holds Peruvian citizenship. His long-standing connection to the country also explains why Chiclayo occupies such a large part of the official itinerary.
