Now things are getting concrete! From November 11 to 16, 2026, Pope Leo XIV will be traveling through Peru. Lima, Chiclayo, Pimentel, Santa Cruz de Succhabamba, Zaña, Cusco, and Pucallpa are on the travel itinerary. While the church, police, municipalities, and regional governments ramp up preparations, visitors must prepare for huge crowds, road closures, long walks, and, in some cases, limited accommodation. PeruMagazin shows not only what is planned but also how visitors can sensibly prepare for their attendance.
LIMA: The best way to get to the closing mass
For regular visitors, the major closing mass on November 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the Las Palmas Air Base in Surco is the most important appointment in Lima. Those who wish to attend should be in the capital by the day before and, if possible, avoid arriving on a domestic flight on the morning of the mass. With very large numbers of visitors, road closures, security checks, and congested access routes can cause significant delays.
As a starting point, accommodation in Surco, Miraflores, Barranco, or San Borja is more practical than a hotel right by the airport. The distance in kilometers is less critical than having the most convenient connection toward Surco. For a mass at 10:30 a.m., no one should plan on arriving at the site at 9 a.m. Long walks and security checks must be factored in. As soon as the authorities publish the final access gates and traffic corridors, travel should be planned according to these guidelines. Trying to drive a taxi or rental car directly to the gates of Las Palmas is unlikely to be a good strategy.
PIMENTEL: Especially interesting for visitors from Northern Peru
The mass on the Pampas de Pimentel on November 13 at 10:30 a.m. is likely to be one of the most interesting events of the trip for visitors from Piura, Tumbes, Lambayeque, La Libertad, and Cajamarca. Those coming from Northern Peru do not need to travel to Lima for this.
For visitors from Piura or Tumbes, arriving on November 12 is much more sensible than an overnight journey followed by heading straight to the mass. Chiclayo is a good starting point. Pimentel is located west of the city and is normally quickly accessible from there. On the day of the Pope's visit, however, normal travel times will not be a reliable basis for planning.
According to the published visitor information, the entrances for the large open-air events will be opened very early. Anyone wanting a good spot should therefore expect to be on-site several hours before the start of the mass. The DNI or passport should definitely be carried.
Trying to drive your own car directly to the event site will likely be one of the most common mistakes. Very many people will be heading toward Pimentel at the same time. It is more sensible to use the collection, parking, and transport areas designated by the authorities as soon as their final location is published.
For visitors from Piura, this results in a clear plan: drive to Chiclayo on November 12, stay overnight there, and set off toward Pimentel early on the morning of November 13. Sufficient time should also be planned for after the mass.
CHICLAYO: Not everything happens in Pimentel
Following the mass, there are further appointments for the Pope in Chiclayo. Anyone who wants to experience Leo XIV without the scale of the large open-air mass should therefore also monitor the official information regarding his other stops.
An important caveat applies: An appointment on the papal travel program does not automatically mean that the public has free access to the Pope. Some events are aimed at specific groups or invited participants. No one should therefore plan a trip solely based on a time until public access has been confirmed for the respective appointment.
SANTA CRUZ: The trip here must be planned with special care
The mass in Santa Cruz de Succhabamba on November 14 at 11 a.m. is likely to be one of the most extraordinary stops. For visitors, it is also one of the most difficult. The Pope himself arrives by helicopter from Chiclayo, whereas regular visitors must travel overland.
Setting off from Chiclayo on the morning of the mass is not recommended. Roads, parking, and accommodation are much more limited than in the large cities. Anyone wishing to attend the mass should therefore be in the region by November 13 at the latest and book their accommodation as early as possible.
Even with your own vehicle, no one should assume they can drive directly to the esplanade. If there is a corresponding rush of visitors, parking areas, security zones, and footpaths will be necessary. For Santa Cruz, an organized pilgrimage might therefore be more practical than a completely independent trip.
ZAÑA: Easily combined with Chiclayo
On the afternoon of November 14, the Pope travels to Zaña. The prayer meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. For visitors, this stop is primarily interesting if they are staying in Chiclayo or Lambayeque anyway.
Conversely, those who were at the mass in Santa Cruz in the morning should not automatically assume they can easily combine both events. Return travel, security measures, and additional traffic volume can significantly affect the schedule. If you absolutely want to see Leo XIV in Zaña, it is better to choose this appointment as the main event of the day.
CUSCO: It will be difficult without preparation
The appointment at Sacsayhuamán on November 15 at 10:30 a.m. differs significantly from the major mass in Lima. A registration or pass system is being reviewed for access. Visitors should therefore not assume they can simply drive to Sacsayhuamán in the morning and enter without further preparation.
As soon as the church or authorities publish an official registration link or QR access, registration should take place exclusively via these official channels. No one should purchase supposed entry tickets or access passes via Facebook, WhatsApp, or private sellers.
Those coming from Lima or abroad should also not fly to Cusco on the morning of November 15. In addition to potential traffic problems, altitude plays an important role: Cusco is located at about 3,400 meters. For visitors not used to this altitude, arriving at least one to two days beforehand makes sense.
Even getting to Sacsayhuamán by taxi should not be taken for granted. At an event with tens of thousands of people, collection points, controlled access, and longer walks are likely. Comfortable shoes are particularly important here.
PLAZA MAYOR CUSCO: Second chance the same morning
The Angelus in front of the cathedral at Plaza Mayor is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. However, there are only 75 minutes between Sacsayhuamán and this program item. Visitors should therefore not try to get a good spot at the Plaza Mayor quickly after the meeting at Sacsayhuamán.
Anyone who prefers to see the Pope in the historic center should focus on the appointment at the Plaza Mayor from the start. Information on the historic center and local orientation can be found on the Cusco page of PeruMagazin.
PUCALLPA: Arrive early – and take the heat seriously
The big mass in the Villa Deportiva Regional Ucayali begins on November 15 at 4:45 p.m. Visitors should also plan for several hours of lead time here. However, Pucallpa makes completely different demands than Cusco. Instead of altitude and cooler temperatures, heat, high humidity, and intense sunlight are the main burdens.
Water, sun protection, and a lightweight hat are therefore part of the basic equipment. Older visitors and families with small children should avoid waiting for unnecessarily long hours in direct sunlight. Medical care is to be provided at the event areas.
The Pope meets missionaries and representatives of indigenous peoples at Malecón Puerto Callao in Yarinacocha as early as 3:00 p.m. It is risky for regular visitors to try to make it to the mass in time afterward. Those primarily interested in attending the mass should therefore go directly to the Villa Deportiva or the visitor access to be announced later.
WHAT GOES IN THE BACKPACK?
For the large open-air events, luggage should be kept as small as possible. DNI or passport, water, sun protection, headgear, necessary medication, smartphone, and a power bank are useful. Comfortable shoes are more important than fancy clothes.
For events in Cusco, warmer clothing should also be included in your luggage. In Pimentel, Lima, and especially Pucallpa, however, sun protection is critical. Which items are actually allowed on the event grounds will depend on the security regulations yet to be published. Large bags and unnecessary luggage should be avoided as much as possible.
WHICH EVENT SUITS WHICH VISITOR?
Anyone coming from Piura or Tumbes can most reasonably reach the mass in Pimentel on November 13. An overnight stay in Chiclayo the night before makes attendance much easier.
Anyone planning a Peru trip via Lima anyway has the largest public event with the closing mass in Las Palmas on November 16. Those already in Cusco should decide between Sacsayhuamán and the Plaza Mayor. For visitors in Ucayali, the mass in Pucallpa is the obvious event.
Santa Cruz is particularly suitable for visitors from Cajamarca as well as for pilgrims who deliberately organize their trip several days in advance. A spontaneous arrival is significantly more difficult there than at the events in the big cities.
VERY IMPORTANT: Not every appointment is publicly accessible
In addition to the large events, the Pope's published travel itinerary includes meetings with specific groups, church appointments, and official encounters. Just because the Pope appears at a location does not automatically mean that visitors can participate without registration or an invitation.
For travelers, the masses and public encounters officially intended for large numbers of visitors are the most interesting. For all other program items, one should first check whether a public visitor area is actually provided.
PERUMAGAZIN UPDATES THE VISITOR PLAN
Some crucial information is still missing. This includes the final access gates, specific road closures, park-and-ride areas, special buses, and in some cases, the registration procedures. These details may become more important for the actual journey than the distance between the hotel and the event site.
PeruMagazin is therefore continuing to follow the preparations in Lima, Chiclayo, Pimentel, Santa Cruz, Zaña, Cusco, and Pucallpa. As soon as authorities or the church publish the final access plans, travel, entrances, traffic routes, and practical tips will be updated accordingly.
