Pope Leo XIV in Chiclayo and Pimentel on November 13, 2026, will be one of the highlights of his visit to Peru. On the third day of his visit, the Pope will leave Lima and travel to northern Peru. The focal point will be the large mass in the Pampas de Pimentel, followed by several engagements in Chiclayo.
For visitors, the morning is the most important part of the day. At 10:30 a.m., Pope Leo XIV will celebrate mass on the large open field in Pimentel. In the afternoon, the program will be more focused on church groups and the academic community.

Pope Leo XIV arrives in Chiclayo in the morning
At 07:40 a.m., Pope Leo XIV will depart from the air base in Callao for Chiclayo. His arrival at the Base Aérea Teniente Coronel Pedro Ruiz Gallo is scheduled for 09:10 a.m. The air base is not an event venue open to the public; visitors should therefore not expect to attend the official arrival.
It is more important how the Pope will be transported from Chiclayo to Pimentel afterward. A final public travel route with confirmed spectator areas along the way has not yet been published. Those wishing to see the Pope should therefore plan for the grand mass in Pimentel as the most important opportunity of the morning. An overview of the city and its surroundings can be found in the PeruMagazin travel guide for Chiclayo.
10:30 a.m.: Grand Papal Mass in the Pampas de Pimentel
The Holy Mass in the Explanada de las Pampas de Pimentel begins at 10:30 a.m. It is by far the largest public event of the day and is expected to bring together believers from Chiclayo, Lambayeque, and other regions of northern Peru.
For visitors who wish to see Pope Leo XIV in person on November 13, Pimentel is therefore the most important location. Unlike the later meetings, this is not an event for a specific delegation or professional group, but a large open-air mass. A correspondingly high turnout of visitors is to be expected. Regional reports speak of preparations for a very large number of the faithful. However, such estimates should not be confused with a confirmed actual attendance figure.
Further information on Pimentel and other destinations in the area can be found on the PeruMagazin page for the Lambayeque Department.
When should you travel to Pimentel?
Anyone wishing to attend the mass should not arrive in Pimentel just before 10:30 a.m. For a major event of this scale, extensive traffic measures, security checks, and long walks to the venue are likely.
Final entry times, access points, and security zones have not yet been fully announced. A detailed traffic plan for the route between Chiclayo and Pimentel is also still pending. For visitors from other parts of Peru, staying overnight in Chiclayo or Pimentel on November 12 is much more sensible than traveling on the morning of the mass.
Chiclayo or Pimentel as a base?
Those who mainly want to attend the papal mass will have a shorter journey to the venue if they stay in or near Pimentel. However, those who also want to visit Chiclayo and potentially follow other parts of the Pope's program may choose Chiclayo as a base.
The two locations are close to each other. On the day of the papal visit, however, normal travel times are not a reliable benchmark. Road closures, security zones, and additional traffic can significantly slow down travel. Visitors should therefore avoid planning their day too tightly.
12:40 p.m.: Private visit to the Capilla San Óscar A. Romero
After the mass, a visit to the Capilla San Óscar A. Romero is on the official program at 12:40 p.m. The Vatican explicitly designates this as a private visit. For visitors, this program item should therefore not be planned as a regular public event.
Whether areas for spectators will be set up along the arrival or departure route has not yet been confirmed.
04:30 p.m.: Church encounter in Chiclayo
In the afternoon, Pope Leo XIV will continue his program in Chiclayo. At 04:30 p.m., he will meet with bishops, priests, religious, seminarians, synodal teams, and pastoral councils at the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Paz.
This appointment is aimed at clearly defined church groups. It should therefore not be assumed that there will be general open access for regular visitors. Those who are not among the invited participants should not plan this appointment as a certain opportunity to see the Pope inside the sanctuary.
More about the entire stay in northern Peru can already be found in the article Pope Leo XIV returns to Chiclayo: This is the program for his visit in November.
05:45 p.m.: Pope Leo XIV meets the academic world
At 05:45 p.m., Pope Leo XIV will visit the Universidad Católica Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo in Chiclayo, where a meeting with the academic world will take place. The university has a special significance for Leo XIV: Robert Francis Prevost served in the region for many years and was closely linked to the church and academic life of Chiclayo.
Here, too, a distinction should be made between the official meeting and a freely accessible public papal event. The event is aimed at the academic community and will be organized accordingly.
The evening is not public
At 07:00 p.m., the official daily program ends with a dinner with the priests of the Diocese of Chiclayo at the Colegio Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo. This appointment is not public and plays no significant role in visitor planning.
How much does it cost to attend the mass?
Church events during the papal visit are generally intended to be free of charge. However, for major events, access passes, registrations, or designated access areas may be required.
For the mass in the Pampas de Pimentel, therefore, further announcements from church organizers and local authorities are decisive. Visitors should not confuse third-party paid offers with an official admission to the papal mass.
What remains unclear for Pimentel?
Several important pieces of information are currently still missing for final visitor planning. These include the exact entrances to the event site, opening times for access, possible registrations or passes, parking and bus areas, road closures between Chiclayo and Pimentel, and permitted items on the grounds.
The exact travel route of the Pope between the air base, Pimentel, and his later appointments in Chiclayo has also not yet been confirmed as a public spectator route. PeruMagazin will update this information as soon as the authorities and church organizers publish the final plans.
Where can visitors see Pope Leo XIV on November 13?
The mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Pampas de Pimentel is the most important and currently the clearest opportunity for the general public. Anyone who only wants to choose one appointment should therefore focus their planning on Pimentel.
The later events at the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Paz and the Universidad Católica Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo are aimed at specific participant groups. The visit to the Capilla San Óscar A. Romero and the dinner are not public. Thus, the morning in Pimentel is the central segment of the third day of the papal trip for normal visitors.
