Cordillera Huayhuash at a glance

The Cordillera Huayhuash is a compact, heavily glaciated mountain range in the Peruvian Andes south of the Cordillera Blanca. It spans areas of Áncash, Huánuco, and Lima and is characterized by high peaks such as Yerupajá and Siula Grande.

For travelers, Huayhuash is known primarily as a multi-day trekking area. Highland lagoons, remote valleys, steep passes and campsites determine the course of the tours. A short visit only provides a glimpse of this landscape.

Why the Cordillera Huayhuash is special

High glaciated peaks, deep valleys and intense blue-green high-mountain lakes lie within a comparatively small area. Particularly impressive are the views of Yerupajá, Siula Grande, Jirishanca and the lake landscapes around Carhuacocha.

The remoteness distinguishes Huayhuash from more easily accessible Andean destinations. Many stages lead far away from larger towns through puna landscapes and high mountain valleys.

Routes and important areas

The exact route depends on tour duration, starting point, weather and tour operator. Several variants connect high passes, lagoons and camps around the central mountain massif.

Classic Huayhuash circuit

The classic circuit leads around the central mountain massif over several days. The number and altitude of the passes as well as the campsites used differ depending on the variant.

Carhuacocha

Laguna Carhuacocha is one of the most famous landscape highlights of the region. From its surroundings, striking views of several glaciated peaks open up.

High passes

Several crossings are at high altitudes. These sections make the trekking scenically extraordinary, but at the same time increase the physical demands.

Lagoons, glaciers and wildlife

The landscape ranges from dry high Andean valleys and puna grasslands to glaciated summit zones. High-mountain lakes like Carhuacocha define many of the most famous views.

Typical Andean animals such as viscachas and various highland birds can be observed along the routes. Wildlife should neither be fed nor pursued.

Entrance, local fees and visiting

There is no single central entrance with a uniform ticket for the Cordillera Huayhuash. Trekking routes pass through territories of different communities, so local access, camping or community fees may apply depending on the route.

Before the tour, conditions for the specific chosen route should be checked. An experienced local operator can coordinate transport, camps, catering and the respective access regulations.

Best time to visit

For longer trekking tours, the drier months from approximately May to September are usually chosen. The chances of stable visibility are higher then, although nights at high altitudes can be very cold.

Even in the dry season, high-mountain weather remains changeable. Rain, wind, strong solar radiation and rapid temperature changes must be taken into account during planning.

Current situation

Before setting off, travelers should check weather, road conditions, local access and notices from the communities or regional authorities. After heavy rainfall, remote access roads and trails can become difficult to pass at short notice.

How demanding is the hike?

Multi-day tours in Huayhuash are among the more demanding trekking routes in Peru. High altitudes, repeated ascents and descents, cold nights and long daily stages require good fitness and sufficient acclimatization.

Those with little experience above 4,000 meters should plan conservatively. Symptoms of altitude sickness must be taken seriously and may necessitate a descent.

What should be in the backpack?

  • Broken-in trekking or mountain boots
  • Warm clothing using a layering system
  • Rain and wind protection
  • Sunglasses, headgear and sun protection
  • Hydration system and suitable water treatment
  • Personal medication and first-aid kit
  • Headlamp and spare power
  • Camping equipment suitable for the planned route
