Why the Cataratas de Caracucho are special

The Cataratas de Caracucho form a striking contrast to the dry landscape of Morropón province. The water falls over several rock ledges and collects in a small natural lagoon. According to MINCETUR, the waterfall flows all year round; during the rainy season from December to April, the flow increases significantly.

The surrounding dry forest is an important part of the visit. Hualtaco, Palo Santo, Sapote, Algarrobo, Faique, and Ceibo are some of the plants mentioned for this landscape. Additionally, birds such as the Chilalo, hummingbirds, parrots, and parakeets, as well as other animals of the northern Peruvian dry forest, can be found here.

Location and arrival

The cataracts are located in the Comunidad Campesina Caracucho-Jacanacas in the district of Santo Domingo, province of Morropón. According to MINCETUR, the drive from the terminal in Castilla near Piura to Morropón takes about 65 kilometers and around one and a half hours. From Morropón, you continue towards Caracucho.

From the Centro Poblado Caracucho, a hiking trail leads to the waterfall. The current MINCETUR survey indicates about six kilometers and approximately one hour of walking time. Allow sufficient time for the round trip.

Waterfall and natural pools

The total height is estimated at approximately 14 meters. The water is distributed over three tiers and subsequently reaches a small lagoon with a rocky bottom. The water temperature is described as being around 20 degrees Celsius.

With a stronger flow, the situation at the rocks and pools changes significantly. Swimming should therefore always depend on the conditions on-site. After rain, paths can be slippery and water levels can be higher.

Hiking, wildlife, and activities

The trail through the dry forest is part of the experience itself. MINCETUR lists hiking, landscape observation, bird watching, flora and fauna observation, photography, camping, and cycling as possible activities.

For wildlife observation, quiet times of the day are more favorable. In addition to various bird species, deer, skunks, iguanas, and snakes are mentioned for the area. Animals should not be fed or disturbed.

Admission and visiting

MINCETUR generally lists access as free, but also points out that the tourist area is managed by the Asociación Caracucho. Visitors should therefore check for current local regulations or possible contributions on-site.

Best time to visit

A visit is generally possible throughout the year. Between December and April, the cataract usually carries more water, but rain and wet paths can make the hike more difficult. From May to November, the flow is lower and the paths can be drier.

Visit advice and difficulty

For the hike, sturdy shoes, drinking water, sun protection, and insect repellent are useful. Due to distance, heat, and uneven ground, the route is more demanding than a short walk. After heavy rain, check on-site whether the path is safe to use.

According to MINCETUR, the local community looks after cleaning and preservation. Waste should be taken away completely, and plants, animals, and water sources should be respected.
