Bongará is one of the most exciting provinces in Amazonas: Gocta near Valera, Yumbilla near Cuispes, Pomacochas near Florida, Jumbilla as the provincial capital, and Pedro Ruiz as a transportation hub between Jaén, Bagua, and Chachapoyas.

Bongará is located in the northern part of the Amazonas region and borders Chachapoyas, Luya, Utcubamba, and Condorcanqui, as well as San Martín and Loreto. The province connects several of the region's most important natural attractions with the practical transport routes between Jaén and Chachapoyas.
The best-known names are Gocta in the Valera district and Yumbilla near Cuispes. These are joined by Laguna de Pomacochas, smaller waterfalls, humid montane forests, coffee and agricultural areas, and towns such as Jumbilla, Pedro Ruiz Gallo, Jazán, Florida, and Pomacochas.
Bongará is therefore not just a destination, but an entire route landscape: Those planning a leisurely trip through Amazonas can easily combine days in nature, overnight stays, and onward travel here.

Gocta is the best-known anchor. But Cuispes, Yumbilla, Pomacochas, Jumbilla, Pedro Ruiz and the roads towards Chachapoyas make the province a nature and trekking area of its own.
The province is exciting for travelers because it combines large waterfalls, lakes, transportation hubs, and quieter places in a small area. It is suitable for day trips from Chachapoyas, but also for spending a few nights on the road.
The famous waterfall is located in the Valera District and is usually visited via Cocachimba or San Pablo.
A mighty waterfall near Cuispes and a quieter alternative for nature travelers with more time.
Lake and bird area near Florida, ideal as a stopover between Jaén, Pedro Ruiz, and Chachapoyas.
Practical transport hub in the Jazán District and important for onward travel in Amazonas.
Bongará consists of twelve districts. For trip planning, the locations along the routes and near the natural attractions are particularly important.
Provincial capital and important name for administration, route, and mountain landscape.
District of Gocta, with San Pablo and Cocachimba as important towns of origin.
Base for Yumbilla, Chinata, Pabellón and waterfall hikes.
District of Laguna de Pomacochas and a good stopover on the route.
District with Pedro Ruiz Gallo, important for buses, drivers, and connections.
Large district in the north and east, with transitions to forest and mountain zones.
Rural district in the western part of the province, near Cuispes and waterfall routes.
Known for its forest landscape and conservation initiatives focused on endangered species and cloud forests.

Chachapoyas is the most flexible base if Bongará is only part of a larger Amazon trip. From there, it is easier to organize trips to Gocta, Kuélap, Leymebamba and other destinations.
Cocachimba is worth it if Gocta is the main focus. Pomacochas or Pedro Ruiz are convenient if the arrival, onward journey or destinations such as Yumbilla, Cuispes and the northern route are a better fit.
The best place to stay depends heavily on whether nature, hiking, or logistics is your priority.
Ideal for Gocta, waterfall views, and short walks to the lower route.
Best base for multiple excursions and a wider selection of accommodations.
Ideal for the lake, a stopover, birdwatching, and the route towards Jaén.
Practical for travel, transfers, drivers, and short nights between stages.
Good choice for Yumbilla and calmer waterfall hikes.
Useful when combining Gocta, Yumbilla, and Pomacochas.
Gocta is better known and more integrated into the tourist circuit. Yumbilla often feels wilder, quieter, and closer to nature. Both destinations show why Bongará is one of northern Peru's finest waterfall regions.
If you have enough time, you shouldn't try to cram both into a single day. It's better to take a route with an overnight stay in Cocachimba, Chachapoyas, Pomacochas, or Cuispes.

Natural province and transit area between Jaén, Bagua, Pedro Ruiz and Chachapoyas.
Depending on the altitude, it can be damp, mild, warm or cool; rain and fog are common in the region.
One day is enough for Gocta, but for Bongará as a province, two to three days are much better.
Easy to combine with Jaén, Chachapoyas, Gocta, Kuélap and Leymebamba.
Ideal for waterfall enthusiasts, nature travelers, photographers, and slow-paced Northern Peruvian routes.
Do not underestimate travel times, weather, and road conditions, especially with multiple stops.

Laguna de Pomacochas is strategically located between the Jaén route and Chachapoyas. It is ideal for travelers who don't just want to get from A to B, but also want to experience the landscape of Bongará.
The area is also suitable if you want to take it easy on a travel day: lake, climate, birds, short distances, and a different pace than in Chachapoyas.
For many travelers, Pedro Ruiz Gallo is not a destination in itself, but an important point on the map. Here, paths cross heading towards Jaén, Bagua, Chachapoyas, Pomacochas, Gocta, and Cuispes.
Those traveling with a driver can use this junction to incorporate Bongará more flexibly into a Northern Peru itinerary.

Bongará is a province in the Amazonas region of northern Peru. It is located between Utcubamba, Luya, Chachapoyas, Condorcanqui, and the passes leading toward San Martín and Loreto.

Chachapoyas offers the most flexibility. Cocachimba is worth it for Gocta, Cuispes for Yumbilla, Pomacochas for the lake, and Pedro Ruiz for logistical layovers.
