Wari Archaeological Complex in Ayacucho now open daily

The Wari Archaeological Complex and the Museo de Sitio Wari in Ayacucho have been open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM since August 24, 2026.

The Wari Archaeological Complex in Ayacucho has been open seven days a week since August 24, 2026. With this, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture is expanding access to one of Peru's most significant pre-Incan sites.

New Opening Days for Wari

Visitors to Ayacucho can now visit the Wari Archaeological Complex and the Museo de Sitio Wari daily. The new regulation came into force on Monday, August 24, 2026. The site is now open from Monday to Sunday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Previously, a visit was not possible on all weekdays. The responsible Dirección Desconcentrada de Cultura de Ayacucho aims to create better conditions for tourists, tour operators, and guides with this expansion. This eliminates the need for travelers to adapt their visit to Wari to specific weekdays.

What Changes for Visitors

The new regulation applies to both the Wari Archaeological Complex and the Museo de Sitio Wari. Both can now be visited seven days a week between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

The site is located approximately 22 kilometers northeast of Ayacucho on the road from Ayacucho to Quinua. With daily opening hours, Wari can now be integrated much more easily into a trip through the region.

More Flexibility when Traveling to Ayacucho

The extended visiting days are particularly interesting for travelers who only spend a few days in Ayacucho. Previously, they had to consider the opening days of the archaeological site in their planning. This restriction is removed with the new regulation.

Wari is also located on a touristically interesting route. From Ayacucho, the road first passes the archaeological complex and then continues to Quinua and the Pampa de Ayacucho. This allows several important historical sites to be combined in one day.

One of the Most Important Cities Before the Inca

Wari was the capital of the empire of the same name, which influenced large parts of present-day Peru approximately between the 6th and 11th centuries AD. Thus, the city emerged several centuries before the rise of the Inca Empire.

The archaeological site shows that large urban centers already existed in the Andes at that time. Remains of extensive buildings, ceremonial areas, wall systems, and facilities that served the supply and organization of the population are visible.

The entire archaeological area covers approximately 2,000 hectares. To date, only a portion of this area has been extensively studied. For archaeology, Wari therefore remains an important research site for the development of early state structures in the Andes.

Museo de Sitio Complements the Tour

Directly at the archaeological site is the Museo de Sitio Wari. The museum complements the tour through the ruins and helps visitors to classify the buildings, some of which are only recognizable by their walls and floor plans.

Among other things, ceramics, stone objects, textiles, and monoliths from archaeological investigations are displayed. Plans, photographs, and further information also convey an impression of how large and complex the former city must have been.

Wari is Far From Fully Explored

Archaeological research in Wari continues to this day. Investigations in various areas of the former city have repeatedly provided new insights into the religion, burial rituals, architecture, and social organization of the Wari culture.

Among the areas studied are Vegachayuq Moqo and Monqachayuq. There, archaeologists found, among other things, ceremonial structures and facilities associated with burials. Also known are a mausoleum built from carefully worked stones and buildings with characteristic floor plans.

Given the enormous extent of the archaeological zone, it can be assumed that large areas still hold further information about the history of the Wari culture.

Wari Can Be Easily Combined with Quinua

For visitors, Wari offers itself as part of a day trip from Ayacucho. A possible route leads from the city first to the archaeological complex and then on to Quinua and the Pampa de Ayacucho.

On this route, different epochs of Peruvian history meet. While Wari provides insight into one of the most important pre-Inca cultures, Quinua and the Pampa de Ayacucho are closely linked to the Peruvian struggle for independence.

Thanks to the new daily opening hours, this excursion can now be planned independently of the day of the week. This makes Wari particularly accessible for travelers with a tight schedule.
