Why the Kurt Beer Ecological Park is special

The Kurt Beer Park showcases an ecosystem that is only touched upon in many travel guides to Peru: the northern Peruvian dry forest. Algarrobo trees and other drought-adapted plants provide shade and habitat for birds and other animals. History and features

The Kurt Beer Ecological Park was established as an urban nature and recreational space. Its name honors Kurt Beer, whose work is linked to the development of Piura. For several years, the Provincial Municipality of Piura has been trying to better protect the remaining dry forest. In February 2026, the city administration, the Bosque Seco project, and Profonanpe agreed on a joint strategy for the long-term protection of the park. This includes evaluating appropriate legal protection, planting native trees, and improving water and electricity supplies.

On March 28, 2026, the city administration reported the planting of 100 algarrobo saplings in damaged park areas. In addition to the municipality and Profonanpe, volunteers and students from the Universidad Tecnológica del Perú and the Universidad César Vallejo also participated. The park is thus not only a destination for excursions but also an ongoing project for the restoration of the regional dry forest.

Opening hours and best time to visit

How demanding is the visit?

A standard visit is easy and can be enjoyed as a walk. 1 to 2 hours should be planned for trails through the park and the main areas. The site is extensive, and sunlight can be strong, especially around midday. Closed, comfortable shoes are recommended.
