Óvalo Grau at a glance

The Óvalo Grau is one of the most famous monuments in the center of Piura. It stands at the intersection of Avenida Grau and Avenida Loreto, approximately 500 meters from the Plaza de Armas. The monumental structure commemorates Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario, who was born in Piura and fell in the Battle of Angamos on October 8, 1879. The monument was officially inaugurated exactly 64 years later, on October 8, 1943.

The monument is made of granite and bronze. Its basic shape resembles a ship; according to the official tourism inventory, the base is 14 meters long and the entire structure is 17 meters high. At the center stands a 3.40-meter-high bronze statue of Miguel Grau. Rising above it is the 3.20-meter-high allegory of the Glory of the Fatherland. Further figures and reliefs commemorate the Navy and those who fell in the Battle of Angamos.

The site is a public urban space with no tickets or set opening hours. 15 to 30 minutes are usually enough for a visit and a few photos. Due to its central location, the Óvalo Grau can easily be combined with Miguel Grau's birthplace and other historic sites in Piura.

Why Óvalo Grau is special

The Óvalo Grau is more than just a single statue. The entire facility is designed as a sculptural ensemble that commemorates Peru's naval history. The figure of the Admiral looks toward the city center. Above him stands the allegorical Glory of the Fatherland; behind the monument is a figure of the sea god Neptune or Poseidon. He holds a symbolic cross shape and a sword as a sign of the Navy and military duty.

On the back, a relief plaque lists the fallen and surviving officers of the Battle of Angamos. The monument thus commemorates not only Miguel Grau but also the rest of the crew of the monitor Huáscar. The original model was donated to the Club Grau in Piura.

The monument is also a central location for public commemorative events. Every year on October 8, the city administration, representatives of the Navy, and other institutions lay wreaths here. The ceremonies link the anniversary of the Battle of Angamos with the Day of the Peruvian Navy.

Tour and visit

The shortest route starts at the Plaza de Armas in Piura. From there, according to MINCETUR, it is about 500 meters or a five-minute walk to the Óvalo Grau. The route runs through the historic center. By car, the tourism inventory estimates about three minutes for the same distance, although city traffic can cause delays.

At the monument, it is worth taking a look around the different sides of the ensemble. From the front, you can see the bronze statue of Miguel Grau, the allegorical figure above the monument, and the ship-shaped design of the entire site. On the back are the other symbolic figure and the memorial plaque with the names of the officers of the Battle of Angamos.

For a cohesive city tour, the Casa Museo Miguel Grau at Jirón Tacna 662, where the Admiral was born in 1834, is a great subsequent stop. The Cathedral and the Iglesia San Francisco are also located in the historic center. Since the Óvalo Grau is situated on busy streets, visitors should only use safe pedestrian access points and marked crossings.

History and features

Miguel Grau Seminario was born on July 27, 1834, in Piura. As commander of the monitor Huáscar, he became famous during the War of the Pacific. He died on October 8, 1879, in the Battle of Angamos. His birthplace, Piura, erected a large monument to him, which was inaugurated on October 8, 1943, the 64th anniversary of the battle.

The ensemble is attributed in the records of the Peruvian tourism inventory to the sculptor Francisco Agurto Olaya; the regional tourism directorate names the artist Luis F. Agurto. The granite and bronze facility has a 14-meter-long ship-shaped base and reaches a height of 17 meters. The figure of the Admiral measures 3.40 meters, and the Glory of the Fatherland above it measures 3.20 meters. Further bronze sculptures symbolize the Navy and the remembrance of the Huáscar's crew.

The Plaza Miguel Grau in Piura was registered as a historical monument by Ministerial Resolution No. 303-87-ED of June 26, 1987. In 2018, the area surrounding the monument was redesigned. The work included granite paving, ground lighting, green spaces, and three thematic areas dedicated to the history of the War of the Pacific, the values of the Navy, and the life of Miguel Grau. The original listed sculpture was preserved during the redesign.

Admission: free (S/ 0). The Óvalo Grau is a public square and not a museum with a ticket counter. According to the official MINCETUR tourism inventory, no admission fee is charged for viewing the monument and taking photos. Prior reservation is not required.

The challenge lies less in the distance and more in the traffic around the roundabout and the sometimes intense sun exposure. There is no confirmed information in the official tourism record regarding the accessibility of all access points.
