Who is Viracocha? Perusina knows!

Viracocha is the supreme god of Inca mythology and is revered as the creator of all things. He created the heavens, earth, sun, moon, stars, and even the first humans. However, his first creations were so disobedient that he punished them with a massive flood – yes, a real reset button for the world! Afterwards, he molded new, better humans from stone.

Perusina has often wondered how Viracocha managed to create so many things at once. "Maybe he just had a list!" she says, as she tries to explain to Perusino why you shouldn't just leave everything lying around. But Perusino is sure: if Viracocha could create the world, then he can also create his chaos – and just leave it like that!

Viracocha is often described as a bearded, light-skinned man, which was rather unusual for Andean cultures. Some even believe that this description led to misunderstandings when the Spanish arrived – the Incas may have thought Viracocha had returned!

Why was Viracocha so important to the Incas?

Because he was the boss of everything! The Incas believed that he was everywhere – in the sky, in the mountains, even in the rivers. He traveled through the land, teaching people important skills such as agriculture, craftsmanship, and religion. Afterwards, he disappeared westwards across the sea. Some legends claim that he promised to return one day.

How did the Incas honor Viracocha?

Perusina: "The Incas built impressive temples in honor of Viracocha, including the Temple of Raqchi, which can still be visited today. They offered him sacrifices like gold, silver, and chicha (corn beer) to win his favor. Grand ceremonies were held to ensure he wouldn't send another great flood!"

"My brother Perusino also wanted to make a sacrifice for Viracocha – unfortunately, he chose a dried-out piece of cornbread. Well, some things never change..."

Viracocha today: The vanished god

The exciting thing about Viracocha is that he simply disappeared after his creation mission. Some say he went across the sea, others believe he dissolved into the clouds. Perhaps he just retreated to a lonely island and is now enjoying a lemonade. Who knows?
