History and features

The Casona was built in the mid-18th century and belonged to Fernando Torcuato Seminario y Jayme, Miguel Grau's grandfather. Born in Piura on July 27, 1834, Miguel Grau Seminario later became a naval officer, politician, and commander of the monitor Huáscar. He died on October 8, 1879, during the Naval Battle of Angamos in the Pacific War. In Peru, he is revered as the "Caballero de los Mares" (Knight of the Seas).

The building originally had two stories. The upper floor collapsed during the 1912 earthquake. With Law No. 10146 of December 26, 1944, the Casa Grau was declared a national monument. The Navy restored the house, and it has been open to the public as a museum since July 27, 1964. Following damage caused by the Coastal El Niño, it was renovated again with the support of the Fundación Miguel Grau and the Fundación Telefónica del Perú.

Today's exhibition connects the history of the Seminario family with the development of the Peruvian Republic. The original saber used during Piura's 1821 independence declaration bridges the gap between the city's history and Miguel Grau's later career.
