Santa Rosa de Lima is celebrated throughout Peru on August 30th. Processions, regional festivals, and traditions characterize the holiday from Lima to Cusco.

Santa Rosa de Lima is celebrated throughout Peru on August 30th with processions, festivals, and centuries-old traditions. Especially in Lima, America's first saint attracts numerous visitors every year. But the celebrations extend far beyond the capital. From the Andes to the Peruvian Amazon, communities combine the religious holiday with music, dances, and regional gastronomy.

August 30th is a public holiday in Peru. In 2026, it falls on a Sunday. For many Peruvians, however, the day remains much more than just a day off. Santa Rosa is one of the country's most famous religious figures and is closely linked to Lima's history.

Santa Rosa de Lima and the famous Wishing Well

The Santuario de Santa Rosa de Lima on Avenida Tacna is the focus of the celebrations in the capital. One of the best-known traditions is visiting the so-called "Pozo de los Deseos" (Wishing Well). Visitors write wishes and personal requests on letters and throw them into the historic well.

Around August 30th, the entire area around the sanctuary is prepared for the large influx of visitors. For 2026, traffic areas have been closed and additional security measures have been put in place. On August 29th and 30th, a fair with traditional Peruvian sweets complements the program.

Another special feature has been part of the cityscape for more than 60 years. On August 30th, young members of the Scouts support the traffic police in Lima, Callao, and other cities. The Scouts are trained beforehand by the Peruvian police.

Who was Santa Rosa de Lima?

Santa Rosa was born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima on April 30, 1586. From a young age, she dedicated a large part of her life to faith and helping others. Among other things, she cared for the sick and needy.

Rosa later joined the Third Order of Dominicans. She died on August 24, 1617, at the age of only 31. Her veneration subsequently spread far beyond Peru.

In 1668, she was beatified by Pope Clement IX. Three years later, she was canonized by Pope Clement X. Santa Rosa is considered the first saint of America and the patron saint of Peru, Lima, and various institutions.

Santa Rosa de Lima is celebrated throughout Peru

The significance of Santa Rosa is particularly evident outside the capital. In numerous communities, unique traditions have developed. Religious processions often meet regional music, dances, markets, and gastronomic events.

In Quives in the province of Canta, the central feast day begins with a mass. Afterwards, a procession with the image of Santa Rosa passes through the streets. A gastronomic festival complements the celebrations. Visitors can try Pachamanca, roasted guinea pig, trout, Patasca, and cheese with corn, among other things.

A particularly traditional celebration takes place in Chiquián in Áncash. The festival lasts several days and combines Catholic traditions with elements of Andean culture. Dances and historical re-enactments are part of it, as are religious ceremonies.

Four days of festivities in Lamay near Cusco

In Lamay in the province of Calca, Santa Rosa de Lima will also be celebrated extensively in 2026. The official program runs from August 29th to September 1st.

On August 30th, a solemn mass, the procession, and various traditional dances are the focus. The following day, the celebrations continue with another mass, a procession, and a Romería. Even a traditional football match between the Qollas de Lamay and the Qanchi Alcaldes is part of the program.

On September 1st, the festival ends with more dances and the solemn blessing of Santa Rosa. The multi-day event shows how closely religious tradition and local community life are linked in many regions of Peru.

Santa Rosa in the Peruvian Amazon region

The saint also has a special significance in the Amazon region. In the district of Morales in San Martín, the patron saint festival is celebrated with numerous visitors, local institutions, and the traditional Cabezonías.

The veneration of Santa Rosa has a history of more than a hundred years there. Since 1912, she has been considered the patron saint of the community. Today's celebrations combine this history with the cultural life of the region.

Thus, August 30th becomes a good example of Peru's cultural diversity. The same holiday looks different in Lima than in Áncash, Cusco, or San Martín. Each region combines the common tradition with its own customs.

A holiday of special significance for Peru

Santa Rosa de Lima is still present in Peruvian everyday life far beyond the Catholic Church. Streets, schools, communities, and institutions bear her name. The Policía Nacional del Perú also venerates Santa Rosa as its patron saint.

The regional celebrations, in particular, make August 30th interesting for visitors. Processions, traditional dances, and regional cuisine show different sides of the country. A religious commemoration day has, over centuries, become a tradition that is firmly embedded in the cultural calendar of many parts of Peru.
