Peru has sharply condemned the recent constitutional reform in Nicaragua. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lima sees this as a further weakening of democratic institutions and calls on the international community to react to developments in the Central American country.
The Peruvian government particularly criticizes the increasing concentration of political power and the changes to Nicaragua's state institutions. In Peru's view, these developments contradict democratic principles and the separation of powers.
Peru criticizes constitutional reform in Nicaragua
The reform changes essential parts of Nicaragua's political order. Peru views the development with concern and emphasizes the importance of democratic institutions, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental rights.
The government in Lima is therefore calling for stronger international attention to the political situation in Nicaragua. This does not exclusively concern the constitutional amendments themselves, but also their effects on political participation and institutional control.
More power for the state leadership
The amendments to the Nicaraguan constitution strengthen the position of the state leadership compared to other state institutions. Critics see this as a further centralization of political power.
Previous constitutional amendments had already significantly changed the country's political structure. The current reforms continue this development and are once again drawing international criticism.
Peru calls for international action
Peru's reaction is not limited to a political assessment. The government also calls on the international community to closely monitor the situation and defend democratic principles.
With this, Peru once again clearly positions itself on the political development in Nicaragua. Relations between several Latin American states and the government in Managua have been strained for years.
Why the development is also important for Peru
The political situation in Nicaragua does not exclusively concern Central America. Questions of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law also play an important role within the Organization of American States and in Latin America's diplomatic relations.
With its statement, Peru underscores its position that political conflicts and institutional changes within the region cannot be viewed exclusively as internal affairs when fundamental democratic principles are affected.
