Machu Picchu: More Than 2.5 Kilometers of Previously Unknown Inca Trails Discovered

More than 2.5 kilometers of previously undocumented Inca trails have been identified at Machu Picchu using LiDAR. PeruMagazin explains the discovery and what it means for travelers.

At Machu Picchu, researchers have identified more than 2.5 kilometers of previously undocumented sections of the Inca road network using modern LiDAR technology. The discovery provides new insights into how extensive the historical infrastructure around the famous Inca city may actually have been.

The newly recorded structures are located within the Machu Picchu archaeological park. Parts of the paths were hidden by dense vegetation and were therefore difficult to detect in previous investigations.

LiDAR makes hidden structures visible

The use of LiDAR technology was crucial for the new findings. This involves surveying the terrain from the air with laser pulses.

The method makes it possible to create digital terrain models and to computationally remove a large part of the vegetation. This can reveal structures that are difficult or impossible to see from the ground.

This is particularly helpful in the Machu Picchu area. Steep mountain slopes and dense vegetation make traditional archaeological surveys considerably more difficult.

According to the Peruvian news agency Andina, more than 2.5 kilometers of Inca paths that had not previously been documented were identified in this way.

What was found at Machu Picchu?

The investigations do not concern a single newly discovered path directly to the well-known citadel. Rather, various sections of a larger historical road network were identified.

These paths belong to the surroundings of the sprawling archaeological park of Machu Picchu.

This is an important distinction. Visitors should therefore not assume that a new hiking route or an additional access to the Inca city will be opened in the short term.

The discovery is primarily of importance for archaeological research.

The Inca road network was enormous

The new findings fit the known picture of the Qhapaq Ñan, the extensive road network of the Inca Empire.

This network connected large parts of the former Tawantinsuyu. Roads, stairs, bridges, and smaller paths led through coastal areas, valleys, and the high altitudes of the Andes.

The entire historical road network stretched across several present-day South American states.

Machu Picchu was not isolated either. The complex was connected to its surroundings and other settlement areas via various paths.

The sections now identified could help to understand these connections more precisely.

Why were the paths only discovered now?

The surroundings of Machu Picchu are among the most geographically challenging areas of Peru.

The Inca city lies between steep mountains at the transition between the Andes and the Amazon region. High humidity and lush vegetation ensure that unused paths are quickly overgrown.

Archaeological structures can therefore become practically invisible even from a short distance.

LiDAR significantly changes the possibilities of research. The technology can detect the smallest changes in the terrain surface.

For example, terraces, walls, or historical paths can be recognized, even though they are hidden under trees and plants.

Machu Picchu is far from being fully explored

For visitors, Machu Picchu at first glance appears to be a completely explored archaeological site. In fact, however, the protected area includes much more than the well-known Inca city.

The historic sanctuary extends over a large area with mountains, valleys, paths, and other archaeological structures.

Particularly in difficult-to-access areas, there are still research gaps.

The new LiDAR investigations therefore show that even in one of the most famous archaeological regions in the world, discoveries are still possible.

What does the find mean for travelers?

For a trip to Machu Picchu, nothing changes initially.

The newly identified path sections are not additional official visitor routes. They should therefore not be sought out or entered on one's own.

For visitors, the approved tours, admission regulations, and official accesses to the historic sanctuary still apply.

In the long term, however, the research results could have an impact on the archaeological development and protection of individual areas.

Before new sections could be used for tourism, extensive investigations and protective measures would be necessary.

Protection takes precedence over tourist use

New archaeological discoveries do not automatically mean that these areas will be opened to visitors.

In the Machu Picchu area, monument protection, safety, and the strain on sensitive structures must be taken into account.

Historical paths in particular can be damaged by heavy use. In addition, there are difficult terrain and weather conditions.

The documentation of the newly found sections therefore primarily serves scientific investigation and the protection of cultural heritage.

Further discoveries are possible

The current find also demonstrates the potential of modern surveying technologies for archaeology in Peru.

Large parts of the Andes and the eastern mountain regions are difficult to access. At the same time, numerous known and suspected archaeological structures are located there.

LiDAR can help researchers to investigate interesting areas more purposefully.

The technology does not replace excavations or on-site investigations. However, it provides clues as to where previously unknown structures might be located.

For Machu Picchu, this could mean that the known road network will be further supplemented in the coming years.
