The Incas were a people who lived in South America a long time ago, and they believed in many gods. These gods helped them understand the world and know how to live. Inca mythology is full of exciting stories about gods that explained nature and life.

The Most Important Gods of the Incas

The Incas had many gods who were in charge of different things. Here are some of the most important:

  1. Inti - The Sun God : Inti was the most important god for the Inca. He was the god of the sun and brought light and warmth. The Inca believed that they were the children of the sun and built a large sun temple in their capital city of Cusco. A major festival in honor of Inti was the Inti Raymi , which was celebrated every winter to ask him to continue giving light to the earth.

  2. Wiracocha – The Creator God : Wiracocha was the god who created the whole world. He made the sky, the earth, the water and the people. He brought order to the chaos and made sure that the world functioned.

  3. Pachamama - Mother Earth : Pachamama was the goddess of the earth. She made sure that the fields were fertile and that the plants grew well. Farmers prayed to her to get a good harvest. Pachamama meant a lot to the Incas because they saw her as a kind of "mother" who fed everyone.

  4. Illapa - The God of Thunder : Illapa was the god of thunder, lightning and rain. He brought the rain that the Incas needed for their fields. The Incas often imagined Illapa as a strong warrior who used lightning as a weapon.

  5. Mama Killa – The Moon Goddess : Mama Killa was the goddess of the moon and the wife of Inti, the sun god. She helped measure time because the moon was important to understanding the Inca calendar. She was also the patron of women.

  6. Supay – The God of the Underworld : Supay was the god of death and the underworld. The Incas respected him because he controlled the spirits of the dead.

Stories about the creation of the world

In Inca mythology, there are many stories about how the world came into being. An important story is that of Wiracocha , who created everything out of chaos. In the beginning, everything was dark and confused. Wiracocha first made the sky, earth and water. Then he created people out of stone. The first people were not what he wanted, so he later created new people who lived better.

Another important story is that of Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo , who were sent by the sun god Inti to help people. They came from Lake Titicaca, a large lake in South America, and founded the city of Cusco, which later became the capital of the Inca Empire.

Sacred Places of the Incas

For the Incas, certain places were sacred. These places were called "huacas" . They could be temples, special rocks, springs, mountains or trees. The Incas believed that gods or spirits lived in these places. The mountains were particularly important to the Incas because they thought that the gods lived up there.

A very important sacred place was Lake Titicaca , from where the Incas believed that Wiracocha created the world.

rituals and offerings

The Incas performed many rituals to honor their gods. They made offerings to the gods. These could be animals such as llamas or food such as corn and coca leaves. They hoped that the gods would then reward them with good weather and a rich harvest.

A particularly big festival was the Inti Raymi , the festival of the sun, where the Incas prayed to Inti and were grateful for bringing them light and warmth. This festival took place in June, when the sun was at its lowest point, and people gathered in the capital city of Cusco.

What happens after death?

The Incas believed that life did not end with death. They thought that after death the soul went to another world. The good people could go to heaven, Hanan Pacha , where they were happy. Evil people, on the other hand, went to the underworld, Ukhu Pacha , where they were punished.

The Incas often buried their dead with things they might need in the next life, such as tools, food or jewelry. Kings and nobles in particular were mummified so that they would be preserved forever. These mummies were venerated in important ceremonies and people asked for advice as if they were still alive.

Nature and the Gods

Nature was very important to the Incas. They believed that everything in nature - the sun, the moon, the mountains, rivers and even the animals - was created by the gods and had a special meaning. Therefore, the Incas treated nature with great respect. They built terraces on the mountain slopes to create their fields without destroying nature.

The Incas always tried to live in harmony with nature. They wanted to make the gods happy and believed that they would only get good weather, fertile fields and peace if they honored nature.

Inca mythology is full of exciting stories about gods who created and watched over the world. The most important Inca gods, such as Inti, Wiracocha and Pachamama, all had their own role in the Inca world. They explained how the sun shone, why it rained and how people should live. For the Incas, the gods were part of their lives and they tried to live in harmony with nature and other people according to their teachings.
