Peru is taking an important step in the protection and promotion of its alpacas, with the government's Agro Rural program initiating a project to train over 20,000 alpaca producers and breeders in eight Peruvian departments. The aim of the project is to increase the genetic value of these South American camelids and thus optimize the quality and quantity of their wool.
With an investment of 32 million soles ($8.4 million), the project aims to improve the quality of the fleece, which is highly valued by exclusive consumers, by providing technical assistance and training in areas such as grazing and water management, as well as strengthening organizations for fiber harvesting and categorization. The program, which is being implemented in 63 districts in 25 provinces in eight departments, includes measures such as the adaptation and classification of alpaca pens and the selection of females for breeding programs. Breeders receive training to identify the quality of their animals and are encouraged to work on improving breeding to generate higher income.
To support the project, breeding production centers were established and genealogical registrations of the alpacas were carried out. In addition, measuring devices were provided to evaluate fiber quality and pasture land was provided for improved nutrition of the alpacas.
