The Minister of Agricultural Development and Irrigation, Ángel Manero, unveiled the project during a conference held at the Presidium of the Council of Ministers (PCM). He explained that this project, currently in the planning phase, involves investments of US$ 120 million for the first phase. This amount underlines the commitment of the Peruvian government to promote agricultural development and expand irrigation infrastructure.
The planned irrigation project will cover 120,000 hectares of land and will involve the restoration of terraces in both the highlands and the jungle. This is three times the scale of the Majes Siguas project, an existing irrigation project in Peru.
The signing of an agreement with the regional government of Ancash marks an important milestone for the project as it allows for the legal regulation of lands. Ancash is considered to be the site of one of the 15 largest irrigation projects in the world and will therefore make a significant contribution to Peru's agricultural development.
