Peru announces ambitious irrigation plan: the beginning of a historic project

PeruMagazin
Peru has announced an ambitious irrigation plan, considered the largest in the country's history. This agricultural irrigation strip will cross the entire Peruvian highlands and has the potential to significantly increase the country's agricultural productivity.

Beyond all borders

The Minister of Agricultural Development and Irrigation, Ángel Manero, unveiled the project during a conference held at the Presidium of the Council of Ministers (PCM). He explained that this project, currently in the planning phase, involves investments of US$ 120 million for the first phase. This amount underlines the commitment of the Peruvian government to promote agricultural development and expand irrigation infrastructure.

The planned irrigation project will cover 120,000 hectares of land and will involve the restoration of terraces in both the highlands and the jungle. This is three times the scale of the Majes Siguas project, an existing irrigation project in Peru.

The signing of an agreement with the regional government of Ancash marks an important milestone for the project as it allows for the legal regulation of lands. Ancash is considered to be the site of one of the 15 largest irrigation projects in the world and will therefore make a significant contribution to Peru's agricultural development.

The irrigation plan is expected to not only increase agricultural production but also contribute to job creation and economic development in the affected regions. Investments in irrigation infrastructure will help to use water resources more efficiently and reduce dependence on rainfall.

This ambitious irrigation plan marks a significant step for Peru towards strengthening its agricultural base and promoting sustainable development throughout the country.
