German millions for cycle paths in Lima – But what about the garbage crisis and the traffic death trap?

PeruMagazin
The recently published joint communiqué between the Municipality of Lima and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany highlights the cooperation between both countries to promote sustainable urban development and, in particular, the promotion of cycling. These initiatives are commendable, but some critical questions arise regarding their implementation and priorities.

Beyond all borders

Is there any benefit for Lima?

  • There is no doubt that building bike lanes and promoting cycling can have positive effects on the environment and quality of life. Bike lanes can reduce traffic, air pollution and promote a healthier lifestyle. But how relevant and effective is this measure for Lima, given the current urban challenges?

Shouldn't waste disposal have priority?

  • A major problem in Lima is inefficient waste disposal, which leads to health and hygiene problems. Before focusing on building bike paths, it might make more sense to first improve basic infrastructure such as waste disposal. A clean city is the basis for any further sustainable development.

Is 20 million euros enough?

  • The promised 20 million euros seem like a drop in the ocean in the context of Lima's challenges. Lima is a megacity with complex infrastructure problems. The question arises whether this sum is really enough to bring about significant improvements. Shouldn't the German government invest more or at least support further, more comprehensive measures?

Does the German government know the local conditions?

  • An important question is whether the German government and the institutions involved have sufficiently familiarized themselves with the local conditions and the real needs of the inhabitants of Lima. Traffic conditions in Lima are chaotic and dangerous, especially for cyclists.

Is Lima a death trap for cyclists?

  • Unfortunately, Lima is currently not a bicycle-friendly city. Traffic conditions are unsafe and there is a lack of continuous and protected bike lanes. Without significant road safety improvements and comprehensive infrastructure planning, cyclists in Lima may continue to face major risks.

While the initiative to promote cycling in Lima is certainly well-intentioned and could bring long-term benefits, there are more pressing issues such as waste disposal that may need to be given higher priority. In addition, the level of financial support is questionable and the question remains whether German decision-makers have sufficiently considered the real challenges and risks facing cyclists in Lima. A more comprehensive and better coordinated approach would be necessary to effectively address the complex needs of the city and its residents.
