Day 28 - Hiking to Rainbow Mountain and exploring the Red Valley

When you find yourself in Cusco, there is another destination that should not be missing from your itinerary: Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley. This breathtaking landscape offers a sight like no other and is a must-see for any adventure seeker. Rainbow Mountain is a relatively new attraction that is quickly gaining popularity. We planned this experience for the last day in Cusco as the place is in the mountains and it is important to adapt to the altitude beforehand.

With the highest point of the hike at 5000 meters above sea level, it is advisable to do the hike after a few days in Cusco or after one of the multi-day hikes to Machu Picchu to avoid altitude sickness. The hike to Rainbow Mountain is spectacular, especially when the weather is sunny and the sun highlights the colorful stripes. The trail itself is not particularly difficult; only the last section is quite steep.

Since there is no public transportation, it is recommended to book a tour from Cusco. The van drops you off near the starting point of the hike, from where it is about two hours to the viewing platform. It is important to set your expectations correctly as the place is often busy. If possible, opt for a tour that also includes a visit to the Red Valley. We found it even more interesting than Rainbow Mountain itself and it is much less crowded.

Before you set off, you should prepare well. Acclimatize to the altitude by spending a few days in Cusco, dressing properly, starting early to beat the crowds, and taking time to enjoy the scenery. Respect the environment by taking your trash with you and not leaving the marked trails.

Hiking to Rainbow Mountain and exploring the Red Valley is undoubtedly an unforgettable adventure not to be missed during your stay in Peru. Take time to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and make unforgettable memories on this unique hiking trail.
