Day 21 - An Unforgettable Adventure in Cusco: A look into the culture and history of the Peruvian highland city

Cusco, the city known as the gateway to Machu Picchu, is undoubtedly a highlight on any Peru itinerary. Situated at a breathtaking 3400 meters above sea level, this historic city offers not only an impressive backdrop but also a rich cultural experience.

The importance of acclimatization

Cusco's high altitude requires careful acclimatization. It's essential to take your time, drink enough water and stay active. A gentle stroll through the historic center on the day of arrival is not only an excellent way to familiarize yourself with the city, but also aids in the adaptation process.

The liveliness of the Centro Historico

After checking in at the hotel, a visit to the Centro Historico should be your top priority. Despite its popularity and size, the city center retains its charm. Don't miss places like the Plaza de Armas, the San Blas district or the San Pedro market. These places offer insights into local life, art and culinary delights.

A tip for acclimatization: The Sacsayhuaman ruins

If you're looking for a great acclimatization excursion, consider a walk to the Sacsayhuaman ruins above Cusco. The view from up there is breathtaking and adds an extra charm to your trip.

Boleto Turistico: The key to the top attractions

It is advisable to find out about the Boleto Turistico, a ticket that allows entry to some of the main attractions in Cusco and the surrounding area. Although it may seem too expensive for some, we took full advantage of it and found it to be convenient.

A view of the heart of the city: Plaza de Armas, San Blas and the San Pedro market

The Plaza de Armas is the central square of Cusco and the vibrant center of the city. Surrounded by historic buildings and the impressive cathedral, this place radiates a special energy. The San Blas District with its narrow streets and artisan shops is a true gem. And a visit to the San Pedro market gives insights into the local cuisine and the everyday life of the locals.

Cusco as a starting point for adventures

Cusco is not only a city, but also a perfect starting point for various tours. Some places can be visited independently, while others are easily accessible with organized transport. The variety of tours offered allows every traveler to pursue their interests, be it cultural, historical or adventurous.

A longer stay is worth it

The fact that we spent three weeks in the region underlines how fascinating this area can be. Cusco and its surroundings offer not only historical treasures, but also scenic beauty and a unique atmosphere. A longer stay allows you to immerse yourself deeper in the culture and explore off the beaten path.

Overall, Cusco is more than just a tourist destination - it is a cultural adventure that enchants every visitor and leaves them with unforgettable memories.
