Valle de Cocora and the Zona Cafetera - Part 2 of my tour through Colombia

Our journey through Colombia began with a mix of anticipation and curiosity as we set off from the vibrant city of Cali towards the stunning Valle de Cocora. Our goal was to explore the beauty of the Colombian landscape and experience the unique culture of the Zona Cafetera. Accompanied by Laura's parents and her sister, who accompanied us on our adventure, the scenic drive took us through green hills and past lush coffee fields that dot the region's landscape.

When we finally arrived in Calarcá, we were greeted by a warm breeze and the sweet smell of coffee filling the air. Our accommodation offered us a spectacular view over endless rows of banana and coffee plantations that stretched gently over the green valleys. The hospitality of the locals was warm and welcoming and we immediately felt at home.

The next morning we set off early to explore the famous Valle de Cocora, known for its giant wax palms that tower majestically into the sky. On the way there we met numerous racing cyclists who were exploring the scenic roads of the region. The drive through the breathtaking landscape was an experience in itself and we couldn't help but stop again and again to take in the beauty of nature.

When we finally arrived at Valle de Cocora, we were greeted by a landscape of lush greenery and rolling hills stretching out before us. The hike through the majestic wax palms was impressive and we felt like we were in another world, surrounded by untouched nature and the tranquility of the surroundings. The palm trees rose high into the sky and seemed to overwhelm us with their splendor.

On the way back to Calarcá, we witnessed an unexpected event as a long line of cars formed, patiently waiting to reach the Valle de Cocora. We were grateful for our early departure, which allowed us to avoid the crowds and enjoy the beauty of nature in peace.

In the afternoon we explored the charming villages of Salento and Filandia, which impressed with their colorful architecture and picturesque streets. The houses were painted in vibrant colors and the shutters invited you to discover the region's unique culture. In Salento we enjoyed delicious, locally grown coffee that seduced us with its rich aroma.

In the evening we experienced an unexpected adventure when we were suddenly visited in our accommodation by a bat that flapped wildly around the room and could not be persuaded to fly back out into the open. Despite the small moment of shock, we enjoyed the moment and laughed about the unusual event.

The next day was about exploring the region's culture as we took part in a fascinating coffee tour of a nearby plantation. We learned a lot about the cultivation, harvesting and processing of coffee and enjoyed tasting the different varieties of the delicious drink. The tour was informative and entertaining, and we left the plantation with a new understanding of the importance of coffee in Colombian culture.

Every now and then, hummingbirds visited us at our accommodation, conquering our hearts with their bright colors and their quick flapping of their wings. Their presence was a constant reminder of the beauty and diversity of nature that surrounded us.

In the afternoon we relaxed by the pool at our accommodation and reflected on the impressions of the last few days. The warm sun and gentle breeze were the perfect end to our time in the Zona Cafetera.

Finally it was time to say goodbye and head back to Bogota. As we drove through the region's picturesque landscape, we relived the memories of our adventures in the Valle de Cocora and Zona Cafetera and vowed to return one day to explore more of this fascinating country.

Our journey through the Valle de Cocora and the Zona Cafetera was an unforgettable adventure full of nature, culture and unexpected encounters. We are grateful for the memories we have created and look forward to returning to this fascinating region one day.
