Cali, the salsa capital of South America - Part 1 of my tour through Colombia

A travel report by Noah H.
For me, choosing to visit Cali, the vibrant salsa capital of Colombia, was a journey into the heart of Latin American culture. From December 29, 2023 to January 5, 2024, I visited this lively and fascinating city and experienced unforgettable moments that made my trip an unforgettable adventure.

Arrival and exploration:
My trip began on December 29, 2023 in Vienna, from where I took a flight to Colombia via Madrid. After a stopover in Bogotá, I finally reached Cali, where I was greeted by warm tropical air and bright sun. December 30th was my first full day in Cali, and I received a warm welcome from Laura, a local friend. Together we explored the city, visiting attractions such as the famous Gato de Tejada Park, known for its giant bronze sculpture of a cat's head, and the Museo La Tertulia, which houses an impressive collection of contemporary Colombian art.

Cultural insights:
During my stay in Cali, I had the privilege of being welcomed into Laura's family and getting to know their traditions and customs. Their home, perched high on a mountain, offered breathtaking views of the city while showing me the challenges facing some neighborhoods once inhabited by drug lords. Despite the security measures and the area's history, I always felt welcome and safe.

Cultural highlights:
A highlight of my stay was visiting Delirio, a unique show that combines dance, circus and live music. Amidst the rousing rhythms of salsa and cumbia, I experienced an unforgettable night full of energy and joy of life. I was also initiated into Colombian traditions on New Year's Eve, when we wore yellow clothes together, ate twelve grapes at midnight, and burned dolls to welcome the New Year.

Challenges and Realities:
During my time in Cali, I couldn't help but recognize the challenges and realities of the city. The high crime rate and associated security measures were pervasive, and the need to avoid certain neighborhoods was unmistakable. Nevertheless, I was impressed by the calmness and friendliness of the locals, who always had a smile on their faces despite the adversities of everyday life.

Cultural significance and salsa scene:
Cali is known not only for its cultural diversity, but also for its lively salsa scene. The rousing sounds of Latin American music could be heard all over the city, and people spontaneously danced in the streets and squares. It was particularly fascinating for me to see how the children were introduced to the art of salsa at a young age, which underlines the deep roots of this dance form in Colombian culture.

Farewell and outlook:
When I left Cali on January 5, 2024, I did so with a feeling of gratitude and fulfillment. My time in this fascinating city not only gave me unforgettable memories, but also gave me an insight into Colombia's rich culture and vibrant atmosphere. I left Cali with every intention of returning one day to explore more of this enchanting city and experience more unforgettable adventures.

Cali is a city full of contrasts and surprises to be discovered. Despite its challenges, its beauty and diversity remain unmistakable, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to experience it on my journey. Goodbye, Cali – I look forward to seeing you again soon and creating more unforgettable memories.
