Day 2 and 3 - The Northern Highlands of Peru: An adventure off the beaten path
The often overlooked Northern Highlands of Peru hide treasures of cultural significance and breathtaking natural beauty. The town of Chachapoyas, located in this region, offers travelers the opportunity to go off the beaten track and have unforgettable experiences.
After the morning arrival from Chiclayo, a rich day opens to explore the treasures of Chachapoyas. Travelers can leave their bags at a local hotel and go directly to the bus station. From there the adventure begins to one of the highest waterfalls in the country, the Catarata de Gocta.
There are two ways to experience this natural wonder. The first option is via San Pablo, from where a hike along the upper and lower falls leads to Cocachimba. This route, slightly more demanding, rewards hikers with incomparable views and nature experiences. The second option, the more common route, starts and ends directly in Cocachimba and offers an easier tour without skimping on fascinating impressions.
The second day is dedicated to exploring the pre-Inca archaeological site of Kuelap. Often compared to the famous Machu Picchu, some visitors claim that Kuelap is even more impressive due to lower visitor numbers. You can arrive either with an organized tour or independently by public transport, which ensures freedom of travel.
Kuelap reveals a fascinating history of bygone times and impressive architecture created by the Chachapoya, an ancient people. The monumental stone buildings and majestic views make this place a highlight of the trip.
Before leaving in the evening, it is worth visiting the Canon del Sonche viewpoint. Just a 15-minute drive from Chachapoyas, this viewpoint offers breathtaking scenery, considered by many to be even more impressive than the famous Colca Canyon. Here the traveler can enjoy the beauty of nature to the fullest and reflect on the experiences of the last few days.
Chachapoyas is not only a place of cultural and natural treasures, but also serves as a gateway to the Amazon region. Those wishing to explore the Amazon in Peru can choose their starting point here and experience the untouched beauty of this unique ecosystem.
Traveling through the Northern Highlands of Peru is not only a physical discovery, but also a journey into the history and culture of a fascinating region. From the impressive waterfalls to the impressive ruins of Kuelap to the majestic viewpoints, Chachapoyas offers a variety of experiences to remember. Discover the less visited corners of Peru and be enchanted by the beauty and diversity of this region.
