Day 6 to 10 - Huaraz: The hiking capital of Peru

Huaraz, the Peruvian hiking capital, awaits adventurers with breathtaking landscapes and numerous trekking opportunities. But before you venture into the higher altitudes, keep in mind that Huaraz is over 3,000 meters above sea level. Here it is essential to take your time and acclimatize properly.

Hiking at high altitudes requires specific measures to prevent altitude sickness. This applies not only to Huaraz, but to the entire journey through Peru, as many places are at considerable altitude. Keep these basic tips in mind every time you head to higher altitudes.

The first day after you arrive, take time to adjust your body to the altitude. Explore Huaraz at leisure and discover the best things to do in the city. Alternatively, you could settle in one of the smaller towns nearby for a few days.

We did that. Before staying in Huaraz, we spent a few days in Caraz. Caraz was less touristy and at a lower altitude, allowing for gradual acclimatization. From here we were able to do traditional hikes like the one to Laguna Paron and even the famous trek to Laguna 69.

Of course, both of these hikes can also be easily done from Huaraz. After moving to Huaraz, we did two more hikes, one to the newly discovered (by travelers) Laguna Churup and a tour to the rapidly retreating Pastoruri Glacier, which sits at 5000 meters above sea level.

The most popular multi-day trek is the three-day or four-day Santa Cruz Trek. We didn't do this one because we visited Huaraz in the off season and it rained in the afternoon. But it's definitely an option.

If you follow this itinerary, after exploring Huaraz, take an overnight bus to Lima, where you can take a plane to Iquitos, the gateway to the jungle.
