Peru's Renaissance: A Triumph of Tourism
In the dizzying heights of the Andes, between ancient ruins and vibrant metropolises, Peru is blossoming as a true hotspot for international tourism. A look at the figures for the period January to October 2023 reveals a staggering increase in international tourist arrivals of an impressive 26.6% compared to last year. This triumphant development brings the total number of visitors to 2,028,155 - a number that represents not just numbers on paper, but a growing love and fascination for this culturally rich country.
Juan Carlos Mathews, the visionary Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, proudly announces that this remarkable success is due to the increase in tourist arrivals from various origin markets. Above all, Chile shows impressive growth of 73.1% and attracts 207,000 additional tourists. South America as a whole contributes significantly, accounting for a whopping 54.3% of the total number of international tourists. North America follows with 24%, followed by Europe with 14.9%, Asia with 3.2% and Central America with 2.7%.
Border checkpoints reflect this flourishing interest, with Jorge Chávez International Airport receiving more than 1.3 million international tourists, a significant 65.3% of the total. Tacna's Santa Rosa border checkpoint sees 369,000 tourists, an impressive 18.2%.
Optimism permeates the words of Minister Mathews, who not only sees the current figures as the basis for the forecast of 2.5 million international tourists by the end of the year, but also emphasizes the importance of tourism for the economy. Tourism is more than just a passing interest – it creates jobs, generates economic dynamism and contributes to sustainable growth.
In addition to the impressive international influx, Peru is also celebrating impressive growth in domestic tourism. In the third quarter of 2023, domestic trips exceeded 25.5 million, an impressive increase of 29.2% compared to the previous year. Forecasts suggest that by the end of this year the number of domestic trips will exceed 37 million.
In the first ten months of the year, Peruvian airports recorded a total of 27 million passengers - a stunning recovery to 90.8% of 2019 pre-pandemic levels. This is also reflected in the movements of domestic and international passengers, which are almost at normal levels. A promising look into the future, suggesting that 2024 will bring a period of economic improvement for Peru.
Not to be forgotten is the fact that in the first ten months of the year, 65.3% of international tourists entered the country through the migration control point at Jorge Chávez International Airport. This marks an increase of 11% compared to the same period last year. Likewise, between January and October 2023, around 2.4 million Peruvian tourists left the country for tourism purposes. Chile remains the top destination country with a share of 31.8%, followed by the United States (13.2%), Spain (8.3%), Mexico (7.6%), Colombia (7.4% ) and Bolivia (7.0%).
Peru, a country of contrasts and cultural diversity, opens its doors to the world. The impressive tourism figures reflect not only the interest in the historical sites and breathtaking landscapes, but also the warmth of the people and the government's efforts to promote sustainable and responsible tourism. This is not only a triumph for Peru, but a shining example of how tourism can serve as an engine for positive change and economic development. It is Peru's renaissance that is not only on paper, but in the hearts of travelers and those lucky enough to discover this fascinating country.
