Aufbruch und Wiedererstarken: Perus Tourismussektor im Wandel

Awakening and resurgence: Peru's tourism sector in transition

PeruMagazine

Peru, a country with a fascinating history, breathtaking landscapes and a rich culture, has experienced a remarkable rollercoaster ride in the tourism sector in recent years. Before the world was rocked by the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism in Peru was thriving and a driving force for the country's economy.

In 2019, nearly 4.4 million international visitors flocked to Peru, not only exploring the historical sites but also bringing with them $4.703 billion in foreign exchange. In addition to creating jobs, tourism drove an impressive 48.5 million domestic trips, bringing in an additional $5.910 billion. A thriving industry that promoted the national image and attracted people from different parts of the world.

Then the pandemic hit Peru with full force. 2020 brought an abrupt collapse: a 79.5% drop in foreign visitors, accompanied by a 78.7% drop in foreign exchange earnings. Domestic tourism fell by 70.4% and job losses in the tourism sector reached a painful 52.2%. A challenge that forced the country to adapt and look for new ways to recover.

But the year 2022 marked a tentative upswing. With 2 million foreign visitors, 27 million domestic trips and one million jobs created, Peru saw early signs of recovery. In the first ten months of 2023, the number of foreign visitors increased by 24.8% compared to the previous year. A ray of hope for a sector that is getting back on its feet.

The future seems promising, with forecasts for 2024 pointing to continued recovery. Major international events and improved air connections could help further boost Peru's tourism sector. In particular, hosting the APEC meeting in 2024 will not only position the country in the international spotlight but also strengthen Peru's image abroad.

The season forecast for the summer also inspires optimism. Destinations traditionally visited by tourists from neighboring countries could benefit from an influx. The presidents of various industry associations emphasize the relevance of security, formal service providers and reducing informality to regain traveler trust.

Peru, despite past challenges, still has numerous advantages as an international travel destination. The rich gastronomy, cultural treasures and the warm hospitality of the people are qualities that should be exploited. The industry is calling for increased security measures, reducing informality and promoting online sales of tickets to key tourist attractions.

Peru's future as a tourist gem seems promising. It requires concerted efforts to encourage Peruvians to travel more within their own country. In a world that is constantly changing, Peru, through unity and commitment, could become a prominent force in global tourism.
